Cambridge University Shakespeare Players presents:

Madness? Love.

A forgotten Heroine / tragedy / suicide: oppression
mining all within, infects unseen.
that’s for remembrance. pray.
Remember
Hamlet
                   &      Ophelia

Cambridge University presents Shakespeare’s most
popular tragedy in 80 minutes.
No diversion, no distraction.
Witness the events unfurl before your eyes.
Stripped to its roots, experience the truth of
Shakespeare’s play.

Play me the murder.

On the 400th anniversary of Shakespeare's death, we (Gaia, Myles, Anna and Sam) ask you to help us make our dream a reality, as we start the long road from Cambridge to the Edinburgh Fringe.

Our aims:
Shakespeare’s Hamlet is his most popular tragedy: some might label it with the term ‘overdone’. This is the crux of why we want to do it. Too often, Hamlet is thought of as a historical concept — recent productions focus on re-contextualising it or radically changing it (to a comedy or one-man-show for instance), to the extent that the core of the drama is lost. We want to present it as a play: as something that is happening and unfolding before the eyes of the audience for the first time.  We are transforming Shakepeare's work, in order that the play not only becomes the tragedy of Hamlet but the tragedy of Ophelia.

One element of the play, which we wish to bring to the fore with our minimalist approach and more modernising aspects, is mental health; for instance, considering Hamlet as someone with depression, and exploring Ophelia’s path to suicide.

Why do we need your help?
We would love to be able to take our show to the Fringe, but in order to do so we need the initial funds to hire the venue and advertise our show!

Here is a breakdown of our estimated costs:

Venue Hire: £1,380
Fringe Society Program Fee: £393.60
Props: £85
Set: £15
Insurance: £87.50
Flyers: £200
Posters: £120

Total: £2281.10

What are we doing as a thank you for your help?
We are offering a reward system as our way of say thank you for your assistance in helping us to reach our goal! These range from signed posters to a personal performance for you and your friends. Please check out our Reward Levels for more information!

Any excess profits from crowdfunding and a proportion of show profits will be split between SANE  and Mind in Cambridge - let's see how much money we can raise together!

Meet the team
Sam – our producer – is an MPhil student studying Anglo-Saxon, Norse and Celtic. She is having far too much fun getting involved in all things theatrical here at Cambridge, from Frozen (unfortunately not the Disney version!) to West Side Story.

Gaia is a second year English student, who likes to pretend that directing counts towards her degree. Previous credits include The History Boys, A Midsummer Night's Dream and The Importance of Being Earnest.

Myles is a first year English student. He recently directed Antigone in Selwyn’s striking Chapel. Being generally unable to decide what he wants to do with his life, he has also recently acted in West Side Story and Coram Boy at the ADC theatre, as well as the forthcoming Enron at Corpus Playroom. Most of all, he is as excited as a bee about co-directing Hamlet at the Fringe!

Anna is a first year English student who somewhat sadistically enjoys being extremely busy and running places. Last term she produced Richard II and Great Expectations, among various other theatre things, and this term she's directing two plays, including The Two Gentlemen of Verona. Anna is super excited to come to Edinburgh with lots of spreadsheets (as the assistant producer) and fake blood (also stage manager).
