ORIGIN OF THE PROJECT
“If there are no more grand pianos… I will bring one!”
“People who are lacking everything; should they also be deprived of beauty, culture, art and music?”
Célimène Daudet, artistic director of the project and Franco-Haitian pianist.
PRESENTATION OF HAITI PIANO PROJECT
Haiti is a country of which the whole world speaks remembering the tragedies and difficulties which it has suffered from over the past decades. The situation of the country, well known by all, can only call us to give and to help as much as we can. While there is a necessity to respond to basic needs, we are convinced that culture is also a powerful driving force for human development. In the aftermath of the 2010 earthquake, the last grand pianos have been destroyed. However, each Haitian town still has its makeshift music school and every day, children go to these schools to study music and they find the energy to persist in playing an instrument with joy and passion. Célimène Daudet met these children, whose future could be embellished by the beauty which we would like to give them.
Culture is one of Haiti’s pillars; everyone can feel its evident creative energy: music is everywhere, played with instruments handmade from randomly found materials. Haitian people constantly sing, dance, express themselves through painting and literature!
To this world, paradoxically destroyed and full of vital and creative energy, we want to bring a piano, the first major step of the Haiti Piano Project.
Around a beautiful grand piano, as beautiful as anywhere else in the world, we will create the first classical music festival in Haiti. This is the second step of the project. During this festival, classical musicians from Europe, the United States and the Caribbean will join Haitian musicians. What could be more beautiful than the encounter of cultures through music? Together, we will give birth to this festival, which is one of a kind. Music, through the piano, which is a unifying instrument, will enable the emergence of unique moments of sharing, joy, peace, creation, and encounter!
Finally, we will design a workshop program and master classes for students at Jacmel music school. The third step is therefore focused on transmission, which is indispensable from our point of view.
