Haiti Solidarity: Support an Educated Future!

SOPUDEP is a school located in Port au Prince, that serves grades Pre-K through high school, providing a free education to the most underserved students. With a total of 800 students at now two different locations, the school has continued to grow with the support of many different communities around the world. Contribute to Haiti Solidarity to support programs to increase knowledge of STEM fields and expose students to new art forms!
Should you choose to donate, your support will be applied to following programs:
- Technology Workshops
- Art Classes for Grades 1-6
- STEM and Engineering Workshops
- Science and In Class Experiment Workshops
- Yoga Workshops
- Earth Day Tree Planting
Younger generations in Haiti, the first all-Black republic to declare independence, lack access to education. Three-fourths of all schools are private and require fees for tuition and supplies, restricting access to schooling for the vast number of the nation’s less fortunate. With education as the primary cause of inequality and poverty, this issue remains one of the most critical faced by the underserved. Around 59% of Haiti’s people live below the poverty line, making less than $2.41 a day.
Since high school, I have been striving to eradicate the notion that education is a privilege, rather ensure it is a basic human right endowed to children worldwide. I first became involved with SOPUDEP at Los Altos High School, contributing to efforts to construct the school’s second site and produce funding for the teaching staff and school hot-lunch program. The school’s new site was completed just this last year after starting construction in 2009, and it’s doors opened to Grades 1-6 this fall. (Check out the school's progress below!)
After graduating high school, I began a new effort at UCLA with fellow students. Together we created Students for Haiti Solidarity at UCLA, fundraising to send 13 graduating seniors from SOPUDEP to university within Haiti.
As I start this next chapter of my life, I will be returning once again, this time for an entire 6 months. Haiti, SOPUDEP, and this community have become a part of my life. There is something so powerful in the perseverance and courage of these people and I cannot help but be continually in awe of my Haitian family and I will forever be indebted to the life lessons they have taught me. For the rest of my life I hope to stand in solidarity with them and to fight for the opportunities and change they deserve.
During my time at SOPUDEP I will be working on programs to develop basic tech skills with an emphasis on social change: typing, Microsoft Office, graphic design, and web development. I will be heading programs to increase knowledge of STEM fields, expose students to new art forms, and help to further connect SOPUDEP to their sponsors back home.
Over the next few months I will be posting updates and information on the progress of the projects on my website, so you can stay updated on the real-world effects of your donations. Below you can see how far your contribution will go!
$ 100 you can pay for 1 Elementary Student’s Books and Uniforms
$ 300 you can pay for Earth Day Tree Planting
$ 500 you can pay for STEM or Science Workshops
$ 850 you can pay for 10 Elementary Student's Books and Uniforms
$ 1,200 you can pay for 1 Graduating Seniors College Tuition
$ 5,000 you can pay for 1½ Months of Hot Lunches for 750+ Students (Pre-K - 12)
These students are the bright minds that will use their education to change their communities, country, and in turn our entire world. I am beyond blessed to be setting out on this journey and I hope you will give your support and attention to the incredible change taking place!

In order to be fully transparent I would like to inform everyone that the money from this campaign will be withdrawn into my personal account and then our non-profit sponsor, Los Altos Rotary, will wire the money to Haiti. If you wish to see documentation please feel free to contact me @ [email redacted] !
