$3500

Haiti is the poorest country in the Western Hemisphere where 80% of the population lives in DIRE poverty.  Poverty we cannot even imagine in this country.  The unemployment rate in Haiti is over 40%.

You may be asking yourself “why are you sharing this information with me?”   Let me tell you why and the significance of the numbers above.

First, $350.  $350 is the average, annual, per capita income in Haiti.  Wait, what?  I must be mistaken.  It’s probably monthly, right?  NO! Annually.  $30 per month.  Less than $1 per day.  Like I said…DIRE poverty!

The Rotary Club of Ocoee is trying to raise $3,500 to purchase an industrial generator.  The generator is going to be used to power a sewing school.  One of our members, a former tailor who has done similar projects in Guyana and India, will travel to Haiti to initially train teachers who will then become instructors of others in the small village to sew, cut, and eventually even design clothing.  We are in the process of acquiring donated sewing machines.  We have partnered with a primary school in Haiti that will supply the facility and the teachers to be trained.

Why a sewing school?  The training is relatively short.  The micro business opportunities are large.  After the initial investment, the project is self-perpetuating.  Also, and though not our primary goal, textiles and garment making are one of the biggest industries in Haiti.  We can help train people with viable and necessary skills in one of the largest industries in Haiti.  With some help from us and a blessing from God, we can do something small to help in a long-term, sustainable fashion (yes, pun intended).

Now, we need the money for the generator and that is where the $35 comes in.  I am hoping to reach 100 people to donate $35*.  Obviously, if you would like to donate more…that would be great, but among the friends, family and acquaintances of our Rotary Club members, I think 100 people is achievable.  We are also looking for donated sewing machines.  We have space on a container that is leaving the Port of Miami at the beginning of March.  We have one month to acquire 20-25 sewing machines and $3,500.00 for a generator.

Can we count on you to help?  If you have a sewing machine that you are not using and are in the Orlando or Miami area…please let me know.  We will pick it up!  If you are interested in donating money, please follow the GoFundMe link.
