As a Haha'ione parent and community member this is very disturbing.  I am hoping to help get the word out and raise funds to provide the children somewhere to play as soon as possible.

Playground Vandalized

HONOLULU (HawaiiNewsNow) -One of two playgrounds at Hahaione Elementary is off limits and will need to be replaced after vandals took a saw to the equipment over the weekend.

The set is now surrounded by yellow tape.

"This particular piece is plastic so we can't simply weld it together," said PTSA vice President Keri Webber, as she wiggles the damaged steps.

The Parent Teacher Student Association spent years raising funds to get the $45,000 needed to purchase the apparatus. Parents put in weekends to install it.

The large plastic playground set is rooted in concrete, about six feet deep, and has a thick, safety mat. So ripping out just the vandalized pieces to save money isn't possible.

The whole playground set needs to be removed at an estimated cost of $20,000.

"It's upsetting that someone in the community would do this," Webber said.

The vandals sawed apart the top section of the stairs and the safety handle, making it dangerous for students.  A bucket was cut off on the side designated for students with disabilities.

"This is really sad because one of the areas is really designed for disabled students so they don't have many options," said school Principal Cappy Goo.

On Thursday, there was a long line of kids waiting to use the tether ball at recess. With the vandalized playground set out of commission, there aren't many other options in that part of the campus.

There is a second playground near the office, but having two allows more than one grade access to a play set during recess and gives students choices.

The PTSA will start fundraising again to pay for the repair work. But they worry it could take the rest of the school year to raise the needed funds.

Aloha Supporters of Haha`ione,

Good news! Last week, the Haha`ione PTSA learned from Haha`ione Elementary Principal, Shannon “Cappy” Goo, that the Department of Education will pay for the full cost of the playground vandalism repairs and that the project will be expedited. The portion of the playground that was destroyed has been removed and barriers were set up so our children are still able use the safe parts of the structure. We expect a shipment of new playground parts over the next few months.

From community contributions to businesses offering kokua to keiki donating their toy savings, your support truly warmed our hearts and unified us all during this challenging time. Two separate GoFundMe accounts (Haha`ione PTSA and parent Mike Weimann) raised more than $11,000! Since you donated specifically to the playground vandalism fund, we wanted to offer you a full refund of your donation. If you’d like a refund, please notify us by email at by Monday, September 19th. Tell us that you’d like your donation refunded and send us your name and address so we can send you a check. The name must match the name shown on the GoFundMe account that you contributed to.

You may also have your donation go toward our general fund for the Haha`ione PTSA which is used for international baccalaureate (IB) training for our teachers and our GLAD or extracurricular program which pays for Mandarin and art teachers. Each year, the PTSA raises approximately $30,000 to send 18 teachers for a five day training on the mainland. As an IB World School, Haha`ione offers challenging programs of international education and rigorous assessment. For the GLAD program, PTSA raises roughly $26,000 for the additional teachers. In short, your money will still be used for quality and enriching programs at Haha`ione Elementary School.

A warm mahalo for your generous support!
