Paradise Fire Relief and Recovery

It breaks my heart. Our town, as we knew it, is gone.

On November 8th, a fire started northeast of my hometown Paradise, CA and quickly overtook the town, sweeping across the ridge and destroying nearly every home; 8,000 structures as currently estimated. Included among them is the home my dad built in 1969, where my brothers and I grew up, explored deer trails, learned where and when to pick morel mushrooms. The land taught us how to live with the Earth.

My godparents’ home, all my neighbors’ homes and every home I played in as a kid are gone: the Peeks, the McDonalds, Andersons, Baileys, Quedens, and on and on and on. We share in this loss; it has opened our hearts to new depths of empathy as we see and hold each other.

Much time, many resources, and above all, hope will be necessary to recover not only our lives, but to mend this land we called home.

I have heard the call of my community and have returned to help my family, friends and neighbors.

There are many who are without fire insurance and who are already being denied by FEMA.  We as a community are pulling together to ensure that no-one is left behind.

A friend of mine, who volunteers with the aid agency Burners without Borders, is organizing an open source spreadsheet to connect families who need shelter with those who can provide it.  Offers of trailers, campers and RV’s are greatly appreciated.  If you or someone you know can help please input info here: http://bit.ly/ParadiseRVs

I have reconnected with several families whose kids are part of the special education at Paradise Unified School District, who is planning to reopen a temporary school in Butte County while Paradise re-builds. If the families have nowhere to live they will not be able to attend school. This is a crucial time to ensure that our neighbors and many thousands of others in need do not lose hope.

Please support this campaign as we work with the locals and our extended community to get every person into safer temporary homes. Financial transparency is key and we will share our journey with you through videos. I know many families in need and will work to ensure that every dollar raised here is put to work for those most in need as we begin the process of healing from this crisis.

With gratitude and hope,

Allen and Annie

Hey GoFundMe Supporters!

Sorry for the radio silence. We have been meaning to post an update... Here's one (with your name in the credits!)

(for those not on Facebook, there's a youtube link at the bottom of this message!)

We have been recording the IMPACT of YOUR donations in a (so far) 6 EPISODE SERIES of short films / reports from the ground.

Below is a list of our accomplishments since opening this GoFundMe campaign last November. In the meantime, check out our episodes and SHARE !

And a deep, heartfelt thank you from me, the support team, and all the townspeople of Paradise I've been able to contact and help out.

WHAT'S HAPPENING // Where is the money going?

1. $2000 in cash assistance - Allen visits Walmart parking lot & Lowes parking lot, talking to people and helps them with immediate needs of food, tarps, gas, etc. (which came in really handy when the torrential rains began to pour & there's no one literally no one coming to check on how your doing and to ask what your current needs are.) (Money is a big one for lots of folks even if it's just $100) Check out Episode 2.

2. $1200 - help for Irish and Rick to get their car working so they can move back into their car (and out of the shelter). Check out this episode for more: Episode 6

3. We have a FISCAL SPONSOR: the Abundant Earth Foundation, so now we can receive tax-deductible donations. We are still pursuing our $50,000 goal on GoFundMe to go toward one of our many projects. See: notjustnews.org/projects

4. We have linked several families with trailers who would otherwise live in small cars or at the shelters. See Episode 5!

5. We have expanded: it's not just Allen! Hello! Minea here. I've been working on the videos for our (newly minted) media organization called "Not Just News" -- where investigative reporting meets direct social action meets art. These videos are gaining traction (over 10,000 views in total) and we are seeing their impact through more donations of resources to Camp fire victims, including trailers loans, other non-fiscal donations, and a boost to the GoFundMe. (Help us get the word out?)

OUR STRUCTURE // Who helps the helpers?
We have two places to channel funding through our fiscal sponsor: one fund goes directly to Camp fire recovery projects and people we are working with (100%). The other fund is the "sponsor an episode" fund and that money goes toward supporting Allen and team to continue DOING the work and spreading the word about it through the videos.

Allen continues the hard work of linking all the right people to build a temporary housing village for families of special needs kids (while simultaneously growing the community of activists, doers, fire victims, and supporters all over the world.) We are still looking for car donations, trailer donations, and mechanics....... Lots to do, much accomplished already (thanks to you) and more to be done!

In love and gratitude,
Allen Myers & Minea Bisset

P.S. Please watch our latest episode where we finally get to THANK YOU for your support. . . you are amazing.
