Jenny's Melanoma Fund

My name is Magen Mullinix, and I am raising money on behalf of my best friend, Jennifer Scott. A year and a half ago, Jenny's life was forever changed when she was diagnosed with Stage 3 melanoma. And there the long journey begins...

After surgery to remove the cancer, Jenny was given a 5 year survival rate of 40%. Being a mother to 2 beautiful daughters, this was unacceptable to Jenny, who would do anything to increase her odds of seeing her girls grow up. She applied to clinical trials, and was accepted into a 12 month trial that involved high doses of interferon. The side effects were terrible, with Jenny getting IV infusions daily at first, then having to do 3 treatments a week for 48 weeks. Extreme nausea, muscle spasms, muscle aches, fever, fatigue, and severe weakness kept Jenny in bed for days at a time, unable to move. Through tears she continued, for her girls, and also the hope that the trial might help someone else. In June 2015, Jenny was the first and ONLY patient to complete the clinical trial. Everyone else dropped out due to the severe side effects. My girl is a fighter! Because of this, her 5 year survival odds are a little over 50% now. Never has anyone fought so long and hard for an extra 12%.

The story isn't complete yet. Unfortunately, the side effects have continued to persist, and Jenny is being told no one knows how long they will last. It was a clinical trial after all. In addition to that, she has a tight regime to monitor for any future cancer because this kind is so aggressive. She has to go monthly for 1 year to check labs to monitor any potential damage from the chemo. She will also have to get repeat scans and see the dermatologist every 3 months for more biopsies for the first 2 years. Just last week she had 6 MORE biopsies. Then, the schedule changes to every 6 months. She will require close monitoring for the NEXT 10 YEARS!

In addition to an End of Treatment Party being given on Oct. 24th, I am raising money to help with medical bills that have accumulated, and will continue to grow due to the strict regimen required. I also am hoping to raise enough that Jenny and her family can get away on a celebration vacation. I can only imagine what it feels like to worry about how many days you have left with your children. So please, let's give Jenny one less thing to worry about, as well as a memory to cherish forever for her and her family. I would love for her to forget cancer for just one week, and feel like just a normal wife and mother again. Thank you from the bottom of my heart for every cent, no amount is too small!
