Guy and Cathy Hammond are a wonderful couple who have dedicated their lives to serving God through Christian ministry, counselling and giving specialized workshops throughout the world.  As Executive Directors of Strength in Weakness Ministries, together they educate Christians on how they can successfully share the good news of Christ with friends and neighbors who have chosen an alternative lifestyle.

The Hammonds have taught over 60,000 people in faith-based groups and universities around the world. They are an unselfish and caring couple who have put the needs of others before themselves, have two children of their own in postsecondary education, and have also adopted two special needs children. Their ministry and life are truly a global example and impact.

Over the past few weeks, Cathy began experiencing loss of some motor function in her left arm, some balance issues, and occasional difficulties cognitively. They sought immediate medical assistance and a series of diagnostic tests confirmed on August 1, 2017 that Cathy has a brain tumor.

Further tests indicated the tumor was Stage 4 malignant Glioblastoma, and surgery was immediately scheduled for Sunday, August 5th, 2017, which was carried out. Now there remains ahead a long road of further treatments of chemo and radiation to bring the cancer under control, and alternative treatments are still being investigated.

During this time, the Hammond family will have little income as their salary is largely derived from their many workshops, teaching and speaking engagements throughout the world. They will both need to stay close to home and will be unable for a period to fulfill their ministry responsibilities, during which time they will still need financial means to cover current and new medical expenses.

Guy’s Facebook post of August 8, 2017

Loved ones and friends, thank you for the overwhelming response shown in the good wishes and prayers you offered us over the last week. Let me give you a straightforward update on Cathy Hamilton Hammond's condition. She has been diagnosed with a high grade, stage 4 Glioblastoma. The neurosurgeons did their best to remove the tumor but were unable to do so completely. The doctors are prescribing chemo and radiation and are saying she has a life expectancy is 14 months.

We know that we serve an almighty God; the great physician himself, and that He is the one who will determine the length of her life. Please join us in praying the prayer that Hezekiah offered in 2 Kings 20:1-6. Please pray for the Hammond family as we navigate through this difficult time. Thank you

Guy Hammond

In addition to this already very challenging situation, Guy just received word that his mother who has been battling Alzheimer’s for several years passing is imminent – adding a burden of stress and sorrow on top of what they are already facing.

The Hammonds are simple people with a basic lifestyle, however, at this time they really need our financial support. They have been faithful and committed to others in a sacrificial manner, and have expected little in return. As you can imagine, this has been a very shocking and scary time for them and they are trying to navigate their way through information, doctors, and expenses.

Many of you have been asking for an update on Cathy's condition. Thank you. She remains seriously ill. In spite of all of the chemo and radiation treatments, her tumor only continued to grow rapidly, until about a month ago when it paused its advance. Her life expectancy was down to weeks, however, this new development has changed that. How long it will stay the same size, we do not know, but every month that the tumor doesn't grow is another month of life for us to enjoy together as a family.

You might have heard that Cathy was being considered for an experimental surgery called TOCA 511. With her tumor now on hold, they will not do the surgery for now, as it is too risky. She will continue her chemo regimen. She may be eligible for the surgery once the tumor starts growing again.

While the ultimate prognosis remains dire (there is no cure), Cathy is faithful and at peace with what is happening. She is physically exhausted and is confined mostly to her bed, which she finds very frustrating. Of course, she is surrounded by family and friends to help her, and we have nurses who come into our home to help as well. Please keep us in our prayers.

With much love and appreciation, Guy

Great News!
We have reached our goal of raising over $80,000 for the Hammonds! On behalf of Guy and Cathy, I would like to thank each and every person who contributed to this campaign for your generosity, compassion and sacrifice. Guy and Cathy appreciate every single gift and the love and good will behind it. Thank you for making a difference and for stepping up at this most difficult and uncertain time in their lives. Please continue to pray for the whole Hammond family. We will leave the campaign open for those who have not had an opportunity to give yet. God bless you all.
Sincerely
Ashley Hockenberry

We are overwhelmed by your loving and generous response to the heartbreaking events that have happened to our family in the last 3 weeks. Moving forward, Cathy is about to begin an aggressive chemo and radiation regimen in an attempt to slow the brain tumor's growth. Even with that, however, doctors offer little hope and say we should expect her continued deterioration over the next 12 to 14 months. The glioblastoma is a rare breed, is very intrusive and there is no cure. Before these procedures begin we are going on a family getaway to Nova Scotia so we can spend some precious time together. Ultimately, we are surrendered to the Lord's will in this matter. Like Old Testament heroes Shadrach, Meshach and Abednego in Daniel 3, the Hammond's will honor God and glorify Him, whether he saves us from this or not. We love and appreciate you all. Guy

We are having to cancel the majority of our workshops and classes that had been scheduled for the next year. We will both need to stay close to home and will be unable to fulfill many of our ministry responsibilities, during which time we will still need financial means to cover current and new medical expenses and the other unexpected expenses that have come with this new reality. As well, two of our children have put their educational pursuits on hold for a year to help with Cathy’s care. We are also currently seeking experimental medical treatment in the United States provided we can find a suitable program that will take Cathy’s case. The initial goal for this campaign has been raised to $80,000 to help accomplish this if required and alleviate any financial burden.
