Civil Rights Unite! Field Trip

Donation protected

I work at a large, urban,  public middle school, with a wonderful mix of students from a wide variety of ethnicities and backgrounds (inner city, urban, suburban, and low to high socioeconomic levels). The 5th grade at my school is studying the Civil Rights movement, and how people uniting together can bring about positive and lasting change.  While my city has some great resources, this field trip will give students a chance to experience something dramatic, that they can relate to on a more personal level.

I think a field trip to Birmingham, Alabama, to tour the 16th Street Baptist Church, where four young girls close to their ages were struck down by a bomb, would capture their attention (as it did the nation's at the time), and inspire them to learn more.  The field trip will also include a visit to the  Birmingham Civil Rights Institute, and really give life to the lessons being taught in school.

I have learned that $1500 is needed to fully fund the field trip.  I would like to donate this amount, but need your help!  You will be helping me, and vicariously, helping over 100 of the sweetest fifth graders ever!

A field trip to celebrate unity is more needed than ever, in the current times we live in. One of my personal dreams is for today's youth to feel the reality of the great sacrifices which were made so all Americans can live, learn, work, respect and support each other, regardless of race, gender, creed, or color.   This will plant a seed that will last a lifetime for these students.  Please help me!  Thank you so much for caring!!!
