Rick Fernandez' Daughter, Danielle
Danielle is continuing to show small improvements.
She can now smile when asked, and has shown improvement in her planned movements with her right arm.
She has also been able to move her left hand, which is a good sign, as it means the chance of gaining some movement in her left arm is a possibility. She still has no left leg movement.
She speaks in a whisper, but has had several sentences come through with her voice.
Her therapists have had her bearing weight on her right leg, and with a lot of support she took several steps with her right leg last week.
This does not mean that she will walk, but that she will be easier to transfer from bed to wheelchair for those caring for her. (Although we haven't given up on walking further on in recovery!)
Within the next few weeks she will be having another brain surgery to replace the half of her skull that was removed during her first emergency surgery.
Please continue to send healing thoughts and prayers.
Danielle's trach was removed Friday evening. She has had no complications, and is breathing on her own.
She is still classified as minimally conscious, as she will not consistently engage or follow commands, but she is showing signs that she is emerging.
Over the weekend Danielle gave her dad a surprise kiss when he leaned down to reposition her. She is now very generously kissing both her parents when they give her their cheek.
She has also gained some new skills with her right hand, and is able to scratch her nose and eyes when needed. Because she has dystonia in her right side, it is hard work for her to do this.
Please pray that she will continue to emerge and become fully conscious. She will not be a candidate for rehabilitation until she can engage for 3 hours a day in therapy.
The hospital is hoping she will be discharged within the next 2 weeks.
Thank you again for the support!
Danielle passed her sleep test and her trach will be removed within the next few days. She can breathe 100% of the time on her own.
She still requires life support via feeding tube.
Yesterday she showed the most signs of conscious behavior yet, responding to applied lip balm by touching her lips.
She also was asked if she was in pain, and responded by lifting her hand to each eyelid.
When prompted to speak she reached for her trach tube.
Please pray that her vision will improve. It will be very difficult for her to have a recovery with significant visual impairment.
If you were unable to to attend the virtual candlelight vigil yesterday, please light a candle and say a prayer for Danielle. The family needs our support.
