In September, 2017, our dear Griselda was admitted to the ER for pain in her hip and leg. After a couple of months filled with extended hospital stays, multiple biopsies, scans, tests, blood transfusions, and doctors weighing in, she was diagnosed with Stage 2 Multiple Myeloma.
What is Multiple Myeloma? Multiple myeloma is form of blood cancer that develops in the bone marrow when healthy plasma cells in the bone marrow mutate and multiply uncontrollably. Myeloma cells overcrowd the bone marrow and suppress the growth of healthy cells that produce blood. Although few patients with myeloma are currently cured, many treatments are available to manage the disease.
After lots of phone calls to insurance reps and doctor's offices, Griselda now has a wonderful new primary care physician (Dr. Julia Blank) and an oncologist (Dr. Sean Fisher) who will start her on medication this week and prepare her for a needed bone marrow transplant in the coming months. We are hoping to add a Myeloma specialist to the treatment team as soon as possible and feel optimistic everyone will work together to create the best plan for Griselda moving forward.
Griselda means the world to me personally, but also to so many of us here in the Bel Air Bay Club family and beyond. Your contributions will help to cover her medical and living expenses while she is undergoing intense treatment. I know Griselda would never ask for help herself, so I am asking everyone to rally together on her behalf. Any amount is so appreciated.
