Alex's Road to Music

Donation protected

Hi Everyone!
Meet Alex Chun! He's a lovable and sweet 2nd grader. He loves to play handball, basketball, and any other sport that is offered during recess at his school. As he tells me repeatedly, he also loves to draw and loves to watch movies! Alex is like any other second grader, except for one small thing. He has an ear impairment that leaves both his right and left ears almost deaf. The only way that he can hear almost clearly is with a hearing aid.
Alex and I met a little more than a year and a half ago in a learning center where I had started to volunteer as a music teacher. I was told that he had a passion for music and had asked for lessons. This was both surprising and impressive to me that not only a first grader wanted to start playing music, but that his hearing problems didn't stop him from wanting to play music.  I still remember our first lesson: he finished the hour long lesson thirty minutes early because he started to cry about how his ears hurt from the flute sound and how he didn't want to play anymore because he couldn't make a single sound from the flute. However as we continued our lessons with the recorder as a starting instrument, he began to enjoy music a lot more.
About half a year ago, Alex had to halt his lessons because his family couldn't afford to pay the tuition for the learning center . I lost contact with Alex for almost 4 months.  However, I began to repeatedly contact his mother to see if we could start lessons again maybe elsewhere. Finally, plans were made to start lessons again at his house. When we started again about 2 months ago, I began to teach flute to Alex. As a second grader now, he is improving rapidly with each lesson. In only 2 months, he has mastered how to play a good sound on the flute, along with many notes and fingerings! I am so proud of him and the strides he took in order to get this far in this music education :) Alex always works hard to learn all of the materials that are taught in the lesson and is always motivated to improve his skills in musicianship.
However, this whole time, he has been borrowing the beginners flute that I have from about 4th grade. It is a pretty old and beat up flute that I happened to keep from 6 years ago. Although his mother expressed that she wanted him to get a flute, due to their financial situation, it was not possible to purchase a brand new flute for Alex.
Alex is a blooming musician who , in order to continue as the talented and motivated student he is, needs to have the necessary supplies to help him have more success in music. With the money earned from this GoFundMe, he will be supplied with a brand new beginners flute,  two new music books, and a music stand. Thank you so much for reading through this and please consider donating in order to help Alex go further down the path of music!!

Thank you <3
