We are a WA state winning Destination ImagiNation team, “The Abyss(i)”, from Gonzaga Preparatory School (Spokane, WA). We are fundraising to be able to go to the Global competition and are asking for your help and support.

At the beginning of the year we seemed to have nothing in common. However, through DI we quickly discovered that our love for innovation and creativity brought us together more closely than anything else could have possibly done.
We've worked through deadlines and stress, sickness and personal problems, arguments, frustration, even tears over the last 6 months. Throughout all this, we have learned how to work together as a team and to solve our problems without giving up. As a team working together for the first time, with 3 out of 5 of us never having participated in D.I. before, we earned first place at the D.I. Washington State Competition, earning us a ticket to Globals, held in Knoxville, TN. There, we will compete for a week against teams from 14 or more different countries.

What is D.I., exactly? D.I. is a volunteer-led, non-profit organization with the purpose to inspire the next generation of innovators and leaders. It blends STEM (science, technology, engineering and mathematics) education with the arts and social entrepreneurship. Its academic challenges are designed to teach kids how to think, not what to think, and then present their solutions at regional and state tournaments. Each team solution is scored on a variety of elements, including originality, workmanship, presentation and teamwork. In a nutshell, D.I. is a promotion and celebration of creativity throughout the world. Teams from around the world create solutions to the specific challenge they choose without any assistance from outside sources or mentors, including our brilliant coach, Mr. Carroll.

Every year, seven main challenges are released for teams to choose from. Our challenge this year was a scientific-based challenge themed around camouflage. Our solution is based on the sloth’s camouflage abilities integrated into an allegorical story on society and individualism. Our parameters included camouflaging a team member and camouflaging a set piece using research we did on actual camouflage in nature, along with other criteria.

We are currently fundraising in order to get us to this international competition, which includes paying for registration, travel, lodging, shipping our set and props, etc. With a donation on your part, you can help us realize our dream at Knoxville, Tennessee.

No amount is too small. Please ask all your friends, family, colleagues, and neighbors to help us so we can continue to create and innovate!

We thank you truly for listening to our story.
