Help me go to Illustration Class

$594 of $2,600 goal

In June 2018, I will be attending a week-long intensive art workshop called the Illustration Master Class . This fundraiser is to offset my costs to attend, letting me put that money towards rent, utilities, dog food, and all the life expenses that don't go away when you're trying to make a living from your art.

About me
I'm a visual artist based in Western Massachusetts. I  work in acrylic and watercolor, but I also incorporate collages, words, comics, and more. My work explores dreams, memories, and the natural world. You can see some more examples on my Instagram account.

After studying painting and writing as an undergrad in 2008, the recession and personal circumstances meant that I did a lot of office work! Last year I made the decision to return to school as a grad student in arts management.  Over the past two semesters, I've learned a lot of new skills to support creative work, including how to plan exhibitions, write grant applications, and do marketing for events and organizations. I've interned both at the Museum of Contemporary Art  on campus and with a wonderful local sculptor, Val Gilman.  I'm ready to take my new skills back to my studio practice and focus on the core of everything I do—my art!—this summer.

About the workshop
As the Illustration Master Class (IMC) puts it, "There are few places in the world where you can spend a week deeply immersed in the spirit and practical knowledge of your life as an artist."  This week-long intense workshop is conveniently near me, but artists have been coming from all over to take part for 10 years now.

Going to this workshop will let me meet and work alongside other artists, get feedback from guest artists and art directors, and watch demonstrations from experienced artists. One of them is childhood hero James Gurney, writer and artist of the Dinotopia children's book series.

This intense week will be a feast for my mind, a chance to be challenged and grow, and fuel to sustain my artistic practice. The IMC says that students will "... push their own skills further than they expect that they can in a single week. Students leave the week with strong connections among each other, and with the faculty that will help them take deeper steps into the professional world. "

Funding breakdown
Class fees will be $2,285. You can see I've set this fundraiser a litter higher than that:
- $2,400 would give me a chance to restock some of my paints and help me buy canvases and paper for the workshop
- $2,600 lets me buy a new scanner to better document the work I'll be doing. My current scanner is pretty beat up—I spend extra time fixing scratches and lines that it adds to scans.

About the rewards
A donation of any size would mean a lot to me and help me very much! If you can donate more, the rewards I've set up are currently the only place to buy my work online.

For pet portraits, I'll be reaching out to folks after this campaign for details. You don't need to have a pet to pick this reward—you can send me a picture of any animal you admire, or write to me if you have a different subject in mind.

Today marked the first day my Illustration Class & we're off to a running start! Thanks so much to everyone who has helped make this possible.

For the most part, we're not allowed to take photos/videos of the class, but here are some pictures from prepping for the class! Your help also let me pick up two new acrylic mediums that I've never used, so I can try using glazes and extending the drying time of the paint. These are totally new to me and it's exciting to be able to play with new tools!

I'll be keeping this fundraiser going all summer, so you haven't lost your chance to get a pet portrait, custom painting, or inexpensive print. Sharing the fundraiser is also much appreciated.

Thank you so much again, everyone!

It's hard to believe it, but my class is less than a month away now! I have a lot planned for the next few weeks, both organizing and working in my "studio"—I need to bring current work for the first day of critique and I have to look through my paints, canvases, and papers to see what I need to stock up on.

There are still a bunch of prints looking for homes, along with lots of spots for pet portraits and custom paintings. Prints will go out within a few days of donating, and I'll be working on custom pieces once my class is over on June 17th. If you're interested but need something by a particular date (like for a birthday) just let me know.

These paintings are some warm-ups from last week—acrylic on top of old prints of mine.

Thank you so much to everyone who donated so far! Since I turned in my last papers for the Spring 2018 I've been sending out your rewards—I like to take extra time to pick old vintage stamps and play with hand lettering, so keep an eye out!

I'll be mailing out prints as donations come in, with a small interruption in early June. Then my class starts on June 10th!
