MEMORIAL for Gordon John Edwards
A Capricorn, born on Thursday the 26th December 1946. He died on Friday the 28th February 2003.
Gordon was a good man, with a kind nature.
Gordon will be remembered mainly as a professional Singer/Songwriter, played Keys, Piano, Guitar, Bass in bands: The Lynx, Djijn, Kingdom, Sunshine, The Electric Banana - Hot Licks, Pretty Things, Metropolis, The Kinks, The Firm and as a sessional musician with Tony Franklin, Paul Rogers, Jimmy Page, John Lees. Record Labels: Swan Song, Warner Bros., Snapper, Harvest, CBS, Closer Records, Mad Fish, The Glaziers, Crystal Palace F.C. Music De Wolfe, Atlantic and K-Box Records.
Gordon struggled off and on with our family disease of depression. Gordon spent only a short time with the Kinks band in 1978. He departed when he was left heartbroken after splitting from his girlfriend. “I really felt a lot about the relationship and got really depressed,” he said later. I took her to meet my parents in South Wales. After the split, “I was drinking a bottle of whisky a day to get completely smashed and to blot everything from my mind.” That included life with The Kinks. Information supplied: walesonline.co.uk
He became dependant on drugs, mainly heroin and alcohol to cope with his lost loved and his depression grew. Gordon was not a bad man, he was a sick man with a severe substance abuse disorder that his oldest brother Clem and his friends tried to help him with.
At the time of his passing on Friday the 28th February 2003, Gordon was penniless, alone in a filthy bedsit in Greenford, West London. Poisoned, starved, chronically infected by the hepatitis B virus (HBV). His cause of death is recorded as self-inflicted knife wounds on his arms and finally, along his throat according to the infamous forensic pathologist Dr. Freddy Patel.
It is likely Gordon slipped into a coma very quickly in under 10 seconds and died in under a minute. He bled to death sat on the floor of his bedsit, wearing only a shirt. His landlord found him a week later.
Though little consolation, letting his blood flow was as near a painless death as could be achieved.
Gordon John Edwards is my Uncle. When I first dreamt of him, he appeared smiling his gorgeous smile that said a trillion words. I made a promise that I will take care of his needs as they arise since he passed to the up above. Gordon is buried at Llanharan Cemetery, CF72 9QE, South Wales in Plot number 1145 with no memorial since 2003, 14 years ago. I visit the cemetery when I can as my father Clem Edwards Gordon's older brother, and his parents Verdun (Born in Llanharan , South Wales, raced the uprated E-Type ERA in several club events in the mid '50s, then acquired one of the ex-auction B-Type Connaughts and Eva Edwards née Jenkins (Born in Brynna, South Wales, Llanharan gospel hall organist and accountant). All are buried close by at Llanharan Cemetery, Rhondda Cynon Taf, South Wales.
Good news is so far there is £80 from his JustGiving page (now closed and transferred here) and approx. £80 from his PRS royalties of 26 works accredited to him. In the PRS database, there are a number of Gordon's songwriting works accredited to others for 40+ years. This sensitive project may take many years to put right, calling for patience simply to set the record straight, and all donations are appreciated and always humbling.
I am Melanie.
Gordon's youngest niece.
