Go Jake Go!
on behalf of Erica Shirts
Jake narrowly survived a sudden, unexplained cardiac arrest on November 28 that left him hospital bound for three weeks.
Now Jake is making remarkable progress (his sense of humor appears to be intact), but he faces significant neurological limitations. His recovery will require intensive speech, physical, and occupational therapy.
Erica and Jake are overwhelmed at the outpouring of love and support from friends and family all over the world; this fund was created at their urging and desire to help. Now that Jake is medically stable we have a clearer picture of what recovery will require, so we have been advised to raise the goal.
We are hoping Jake can get back to being the devoted husband, father, brother, son, and friend we know and love.

Here's Jake on a medical flight to Atlanta where he will begin inpatient rehab.

Behold an update from Jake himself.

Hi all,

I’m so grateful for all the donations made. Erica showed the comments from everyone who donated and I’m very appreciative. Everything is going well at therapy so far—I’ve been making progress walking and I should be mobile in the next couple of months. I can now talk, use technology, groom, eat, and make snarky remarks to the nurses all by myself. Things are going fairly well, considering everything, and I am remembering more and more. I’m looking forward to heading home in one month to continue working on my recovery.

Thanks again for your generosity!

Jake

A Note from Erica:
Going through a life event like this is something you never want to do. But if you have to do it, having a community like the one we have makes it so much more bearable. Thank you for helping us with the unexpected costs that have and will pop up due to everything. Having to worry about money less is a huge blessing.
In gratitude-
Erica

A message from Erica:

On November 28th my best friend and partner, for all intents and purposes, died. His heart stopped for no observable reason was put on maximum life support. I personally don’t think that the medical field should be playing the role of God and deciding when an individual should live or die, but they decided to bring Jake back from the dead.

The result of this is that Jake has been hospital bound for 3 weeks as he has clawed back his life. He has come so so far and continues to fight for everything he can. He will now to go intensive rehab for the next 4-6 weeks to keep going.

I am completely overwhelmed by the love, support, and care, that we have received from the rather large army that has formed around us from all of the communities that we call our own. I feel your sorrow, tears, and joys you have shared with us. Whether I have been able to respond to your texts/emails/messages/gofundme donations/cards/etc or not, thank you for all of your messages of love and support. Every one of them is appreciated.

The only way I can describe this experience is that it has been a nightmare. Our future is unknown, but the wonderful people who we have surrounded ourselves with are all that matters.

Please continue to keep Jake in your thoughts and prayers as he progresses in his recovery. We will need a village to make it through.
