Fighting to travel before I'm blind
My name is Destiny Nash from Chevak, Alaska. I have retina pegmontosa, inherited degenerative eye disease that causes severe vision impairment. I have had this condition since birth and my vision is progressivly getting worse. Currently my acuity is 20/200 in my left eye and 40/200 in my right eye, I will eventully lose all of my vision.
Even though Alaska is a beautiful state, I have never left Alaska, my dream has been to travel to the lower 48 and see the West Coast. I will need to stay at hotels along the way and I can not drive so plan to use public transportation. I would like to visit Seattle, Portland and California on my way down the West Coast. I also hope to visit the National Parks along the way. Depending on how many resources I can generate, I would like to expand my visit to maybe NY, Florida, Washington D.C. I am 18 years old and I am uncertain how much longer I will have my vision. Please help me make my dream of traveling the U.S come true.
We visited Seattle, San Francisco, Disneyland, Grand Canyon, Michigan, Canada, Niagara Falls, NY and went on an amazing cruise.
Thank you to all who supported us and to Matt Yeoman & Sue Wilson from Travel Navigator for planning the trip.
I will never forget it.
You all have help Destiny raise $13,000 of her $15,000 goal! WOW Thank you internet, Thank you GoFundMe!
I am so happy for her and what this trip means to her, dream can come true.
UPDATE: Destiny and Grandma are all booked for one amazing trip, 7 day cruise, time in Seattle, San Fran, Disneyland, Grand Canyon, Michigan and New York. This is all because of you!
We really need to reach the goal of $15,000 to make sure all expenses are covered, right now she has enough to make the trip happen but not a lot of flexibility. I would personally feel more comfortable if she had the full $15,000 to cover everything and leave a little room for special things like fancy dinners, additional attractions, unexpected cab rides and a plush Mickey Mouse! Sorry my inner Disney geek came out a little there...
Thank you all for your continued support and this is proof that when great people get together anything is possible. Keep sharing and keep donating!
This is Matt. I wanted to post a update to all the supporters, the trip is planned and booked! We are now looking to all of you to help us raise the rest of the money to reach the goal of $15,000. The trip came to around $10,000 and will last about 1 month. Destiny and her Grandma will use the remaining money for food, cab rides, attractions, taxes, misc and tips. We have also purchased travel insurance to cover any major medical issues that could come up or travel delays. I have hopes of also sending Destiny back to Alaska with $1000 so she could travel back to San Francisco to attend a school for the blind to teach her independence. This will change her life! Besides, grandma told me too, I always respect a grandma's wishes.
I also want to share that Sue Wilson from Travel Navigator has been working with me tirelessly to book this trip. Calls early, calls late, changes in the trip, she is a ROCK STAR! If you even need a travel agent please reach out to her and she will handle everything!

I am sure you are already constantly bombarded with the best doctors and retinal specialists giving you information, but I thought I would give you a couple other resources if you want them. http://archopht.jamanetwork.com/article.aspx?articleid=1149524 Of course it's only one study and be sure to talk to you doctor about it, since they are high doses of vitamins that can have side effects, but the studies on vitamin A with omega 3 may be helpful to some
Hi there...I came across your post and am wondering if you know about Google's e-sight "glasses" for the legally blind? I am not sure if they pertain to your particular circumstance, but do know that they have a requirement of 20/200 vision for them to work. My 90 year old mom was a candidate before she passed away, that's how I learned about it. This may be an avenue you have already explored, but wanted to mention, just incase. Their website is very helpful and informative as well as their representatives by phone. Best of luck to you.
Nicole Harper do you know who to contact at Alaska Airlines? If anyone knows how to contact Oprah Winfrey or Ellen or Make a wish foundation please leave a comment. Thanks.
Has anyone thought of donating miles or contacted Alaska Airlines about this young woman?
