In 2017 the Electric Lions from LaSalle Intermediate Academy in South Bend made it to the Global Finals in the elementary division. They placed 10th out of 49 teams. They thought they would end up in the middle of the pack, this was a huge accomplishment for the team! The team consisted of 7 members and all, but one stayed on the team for 2018.
This year the Electric Lions chose the Fine Arts Challenge. The team had to flex their acting and creative muscles as they experimented with different types of artistic media and theater arts, write scripts and design props.
The points of interest are:
Create and present a musical that includes a change in plans
Include music and lyrics that enhance the storytelling
Create and present a spectacle as part of the musical
Design and integrate a set change into the musical
Create and present two Team Choice Elements that show off the team’s interests, skills, areas of strength, and talents.
The Electric Lions started working on this Challenge in September. The Northern Regional Competition was held in March and the team placed 2nd which qualified them to go to the State Competition in April. They continued to work on their challenge and it showed in the State competition. They placed 1st and had High IC. IC is an instant challenge, unlike a team challenge where teams have months to prepare, plan and create their solutions, DI teams will have to solve an Instant Challenge in a matter of a few minutes. This is designed to help students build their quick, creative and critical thinking skills. At a tournament, Instant Challenge are kept confidential and teams do not know the details, until they walk in the room to solve it. Their 1st place win gave them an invitation to the Global Finals.
The Electric Lions are asking for your contribution to help them get to Knoxville, TN for this final competition Their goal to reach is $6750.00. This is held May 22nd – May 26th at the University of Tennessee.
