On June 3rd 2022 we received a diagnosis that has forever changed our lives... Baby Scarlet Ember Marshall has Lissencephaly.

 

Lissencephaly is a rare birth defect involving an abnormally smooth brain. Children with lissencephaly can experience: difficulty feeding; failure to thrive; intellectual impairment; malformed fingers, toes, or hands; muscle spasms; psychomotor impairment; life threatening seizures; trouble swallowing.

 

There is no cure. However, there are many options that can help prevent complications from this disorder and improve quality of life.

And just like that... life was turned upside down. We will fight, we will never give up. She is our everything, she is our miracle baby, she will prevail.

 

We do have insurance but it's unknown what will be covered, what will not. We also know some things will only partially be covered. We will continue to submit, resubmit, appeal and do our best to seek the coverage we need. It's a lot of work, but we are in this together as a family and will stand strong.

 

Scarlett needs supervision 24/7. As with just one seizure, it can be fatal if not attended to. We've been alternating sleep shifts but this on top of all else is exhausting and taxing on both our physical and mental health. We are hoping for a night nurse and a seizure dog but are at the mercy of our insurance.

 

On top of the medical bills, supplies and assist costs the day to day bills are adding up - rent, food, utilities, etc. Simply put, we are buried, we are overwhelmed.

 

As the future is unknown, so are our expenses.
