Audrey's Treatment Fund

On April 9, 2014, Audrey had a stroke-like episode at school and was taken to the ER. An MRI confirmed a mass on her brain. On Monday, April 14, she underwent surgery for a biopsy on the tumor. She was allowed to go home on Tuesday to rest and recover. We were expecting the results of the biopsy in 7-10 days, but on Friday, April 18, the doctor called with the results. Audrey has been diagnosed with a rare form of brain cancer known as an olidendroglioma that is even more rare in children than adults.

Audrey had a comprehensive MRI on Monday, April 21 and consult with the neurosurgeon on Tuesday. Preliminary results of the MRI showed that the cancer had not spread to her spine. She had surgery on Monday April 28 to place electrodes in her brain and do brain mapping. After determining what areas of her brain controlled what parts of her body she had surgery on Friday, May 2 to remove as much of the tumor as safely possible.  They were able to remove approximately 50% of her tumor.

Beginning the first week in June Audrey underwent 30 radiation treatments and 6 weeks of oral chemotherapy. She then had a 4 week break followed by another MRI which showed the central core of the tumor had increased in size.  She immediately started chemotherapy and had another MRI 6 weeks into treatment. This MRI showed some response to the treatment and she continues to receive this treatment at this time. If she continues to respond positively to treatment she will receive a total of 12, 4 week cycles of chemotherapy.  She has been admitted multiple times for seizure control or fevor including 1 full week spent in the hospital for a fevor of unknown origin.

Throughout all of her treatment Audrey has kept a positive attitude and a smile on her face she has shown amazing strength and has given back to others in need by helping to organize a team to raise money for the brain tumor alliance as well as writing get well cards and words of encouragement to others who have been diagnosed with cancer. More to come...
