On February 21st at 11:41am, Jessica Beck went into cardiac arrest while in the hospital for pneumonia. At 11:46, her baby was delivered via an emergency C section, and Evelyn Gertrude was born, 8 weeks early at 4 lbs 4 ounces. The baby is fine! They did CPR on Jessica for approximately 14 minutes before her heart beat was restored. They did not know what caused the cardiac arrest. They suspected a blood clot but after a CT scan found no blood clots, thank God. A surgery on top of everything else could have been devastating.
They transferred her to Methodist to deal with the brain damage. They implemented a procedure called hypothermia to cool the body to about 91 degrees for 24 hrs, then warm her back up and evaluate her neurological functions. They performed an echocardiogram and discovered that her heart was extremely weak, only function at about 15%. They diagnosed her with a pregnancy induced cardio myopathy. Basically she had an enlarged heart that was causing fluid in her lungs, which eventually stopped her breathing that stopped her heart. She is completely sedated and the machine is breathing for her to give her every opportunity to heal.
Currently, her prognosis isn’t good. She’s having seizures, and doctors are saying it is a sign of severe brain damage. There’s a possibility that she won’t wake up.
Her husband Tyler needs to be at the hospital to care for Jessica, as well as the new baby. However, he’s the breadwinner, as Jessica homeschools her 4 other kids, ages 5 to 11. Their biggest need right now is help paying their mortgage, bills, basic home necessities, and expenses for the kids.
