For the last few years our boys have gone through a complete upheaval of their lives. Despite personal struggles and setbacks they have both done their absolute best. Today we received an invitation for our eleven year old to attend the Junior National Young Leaders Conference (JrNYLC) in Washington, DC after being nominated for it by his teacher.
This is something Alex has earned and then some through diligence, hard work, and perseverance. He has taken pride in his education, pushing himself to do better and work harder in the name of academic achievement. I would love for this to be his reward for all of that hard work especially because he struggles amongst his peers here. The educational benefit of this trip would only be outmatched by finding children his age that he could relate to.
As the invitation outlines:
Among the numerous benefits of attending JrNYLC is the experience of discovering how to enhance the essential leadership skills that you already possess and, more importantly, learning how to apply those skills immediately upon your return home.
By attending JrNYLC, you will be taking the first step on a path to success in high school, college, and your future career. Interactive workshops, group simulations, and historical site visits will help you develop the key skills you need to become an effective leader: goal setting, teamwork, problem solving, and communication. Focusing on these qualities within yourself will prepare you to face future challenges and create positive change at school and in your community, just as Americans have done throughout history.
However, with an enrollment deadline of December 18th, and money needed for tuition, travel, clothing, food, and other expenses, we can't do it alone. Every little bit helps and is greatly appreciated as opportunities like this don't come around every day.
