Glory House Affordable Housing

Glory House is 50 years old and still growing.

In the spring of 1968, Rev. Dr. Roger Fredrickson and a group of his
parishioners from First Baptist Church set up a house where men coming out of prison could live while they got back on their feet.

From this humble beginning, Glory House has grown into a bustling, three building campus at the intersection of 51st Street and West Avenue. Glory House is now able to house 84 clients, both men and women-a total of 414 in 2017. Hundreds more are served each year on an outpatient basis. Residential clients receive treatment, counseling, assistance with employment and case management services. 83% of Glory House residents are employed in the community. 62% of the clients who enter the residential program successfully complete it.

When these successful graduates leave Glory House, they face a new set of hurdles. One of the highest of these hurdles is housing. Affordable housing is hard to find in Sioux Falls. It is especially
difficult to find if you have a criminal conviction and no car. Clients often end up in the same bad situations that got them into trouble in the first place.

Glory House is working on a solution.

The City of Sioux Falls has given Glory House part of the land on which the old ice rink sits. Our agreement with the City is that within 10 years, we will build 72 affordable housing units. These apartments units will be located right behind Glory House, providing easy access to support and services.

The housing units will be built in stages. We are working with Lloyd Companies on a plan to finance this project and we have obtained a $2.5 million loan from South Dakota Housing and Development
towards the $2.7 million cost of building the first apartment unit. We need an additional $ 200, 000 to get this project off the ground. The Chamber of Commerce has approved a larger fund-raising drive
to begin in November 2019.

Glory House's mission is based on the Christian principles of helping people change their lives and serving those in need. We are looking to the local community that we serve for financial support.  Please help us as we walk with our brothers and sisters as they
reach for a better life.
