ABOUT THE GLOBAL GALA
The Global Gala is a community event hosted by a group of University of British Columbia Okanagan (UBCO) nursing students who are passionate about global health. Thirteen years ago UBCO nursing students started participating in a global health practicum in Ghana, and more recently, in Zambia.

GLOBAL GALA MISSION STATEMENT
Our aim is to build community capacity in global health initiatives, increase awareness of the impact nurses have both locally and internationally, and to raise funds for health care initiatives and medical supplies in Ghana and Zambia.

We are happy to be partnering with the Okanagan-Zambia Health Initiative (OkaZHI) again this year. OkaZHI is a local volunteer non-governmental organization (NGO) made up of an interdisciplinary healthcare team. Their primary mission is to work in partnership with Zambian, Canadian and international education institutions to improve the health of people living in Zambia through supporting and strengthening healthcare in Zambia.

WHERE DOES THE MONEY GO?
The funds raised go towards health initiatives, supporting outreach clinics, and purchasing medical equipment in Ghana and Zambia. We always discuss the needs and priorities of the community with the people who are living and working there, and use our funds accordingly. Some past initiatives have included: health promotion teaching in the community, health screening in villages, education on malnutrition, maternal and child health programs, teaching at nursing schools in Africa, CPR training, a hypertension research study, direct patient care in a hospital setting, and medical supplies. Funds will be divided equally between OkaZHI and UBCO student- lead initiatives in Ghana and Zambia.

NOTE: All funds raised go directly to health initiatives in Ghana and Zambia. Students are required to pay their own way/accomodation in Africa. None of the proceeds go towards students or teachers going on the trip to Ghana or Zambia, or any administrative costs.

-Stethoscope $90
-Pediatric blood pressure cuff $40
