Send "The Conquerors" to Globals

We are a group of 5th graders from Town Center Elementary in Coppell, TX. We are raising money to attend the Global Finals of the Destination Imagination Tournament which will be held in Knoxville, TN, May 25-28, 2016.

This is our very first year taking part in the Destination Imagination Tournament . We placed 1st at Regionals and 5th at State, and earned a spot in the Global Finals Tournament. We would never have imagined that we would go all the way, and that our team would get the chance to compete with teams from all over the world, in our first year of competing, and we are so excited to get this chance.

Destination Imagination is a hands-on system of learning that fosters students’ creativity, courage and curiosity through open-ended academic Challenges in the fields of STEM (science, technology, engineering and mathematics), fine arts and service learning.

The Team Challenge we chose was the Fine Arts challenge. For this challenge we had to come up with a mystery story with three possible suspects. The story had to be set in a team-chosen time period before 1990. We chose Medieval Times. Here's the catch- we would only discover live, during our performance, which of the three suspects would end up being responsibile for the mystery. So we had to have three possible endings, and come up with a creative way to integrate the correct ending into the performance.

We also had to come up with two Team Choice Elements- these could be anything- a song, dance, costumes, anything that showed off our strengths as a team. At both the Regionals and State competition, our team had the highest Team Choice Element score in our challenge site.

Every team has a budget of $150 to spend on their challenge. We used a lot of recycled materials and duct tape (we love duct tape!!) for our props and costumes.

In addition to the Team Challenge, every team takes part in an Instant Challenge. Instant Challenges require teams to think on their feet and come up with solutions to a challenge that has just been given to them. The Instant Challenge is kept confidential until the day of the tournament (and even after). In the picture above, we are practicing doing an Instant Challenge.

Only team members are allowed to contribute ideas and create the solutions. Help from non-team members, including Team Managers, is called Interference. Points are taken off for Interference; all the work must be that of the team members, from start to finish.

It takes a lot of time and preparation and we have been working hard on our team challenge since October 2015. The Global Finals are expensive. We have already had one team member drop out due to the cost. The money raised will be used primarily to cover registration of the team, lodging and travel. We are also hoping our friend who has dropped out will be able to attend,  if we have the money raised.

This year, 150,000 students have participated in tournaments throughout the U.S. and 30 countries in hopes of earning a spot at the Global Finals competition.

We are so honored and excited that we get to be part of this international event. Thanks for helping us get there!
