Welcome! We are Global MD students at the American University of Antigua College of Medicine. Every semester our students fundraise for a worthy cause, this semester we are fundraising for two of the most remarkable projects here in Antigua, the CARE Project and the Sickle Cell Clinic.
The Care Project
What is the CARE project? The CARE project is a government facility that provides a home and basic care for people, ranging in age from 8 to 48, with severe mental and physical disabilities. Many have been abandoned by their families. Successfully, we have adopted the CARE project into our system here at AUA Global MD in which we are thrilled to share this opportunity to make an impact for these children lives with you.
Sickle Cell Disease
What is Sickle Cell Disease? Sickle Cell Disease is an inherited blood disorder that causes patients to go through episodes of debilitating pain and puts them at risk for severe infections and long-term organ complications. Being able to diagnose it early and putting an emphasis on pain management can help to prevent the suffering of these patients. There is currently no cure for sickle cell disease other than bone marrow transplants but those are not always successful and they are difficult and expensive. Currently the medical community is hoping for the development of gene therapy in the future as a potential cure but in the meantime pain management is the best approach.
Sickle Cell Clinic
What is the Sickle Cell ASSOCIATION? The Sickle Cell ASSOCIATION is a non-profit organization that helps to improve the lives of Antigua and Barbuda’s Sickle Cell patients and their families. This organization is run by members who have experienced Sickle Cell Disease either directly or through their families or profession. Through our fundraising efforts we hope to support this organization in their mission to give Sickle Cell patients and their families the support that they need to better their lives as well as to help them better understand Sickle Cell disease which will allow them to take better care of themselves.
As Global MD students we are seeking to help better the global community at large and for us that starts right here in Antigua. Your donation means everything as it will give us the chance to give back to our community. We appreciate your donation and we thank you for your support on our mission!
