Jimmy “Jake” James is leaving us soon.
Following a routine outpatient surgery, James Nielsen, beloved husband, father, son, brother and friend to everyone he met, suffered catastrophic complications that he will not recover from. His family has decided to let God do His will. He is being kept comfortably in the hospital until that time.
Jake has never met a stranger. His energy and enthusiasm is contagious. As a photographer for the Houston Chronicle, he brought us images of the highs and lows of life. The country realized the horrors that were going on in New Orleans after Hurricane Katrina when they saw his now famous photograph of a body floating by in the floodwaters. He also brought us the triumph of countless Space Shuttle launches, including the final flight of Atlantis. He has always been the same, lovable guy, whether he was photographing a president or a BBQ joint and he recently was part of the team to cover the Super Bowl. He is an ace on the grill, plays a mean hand of poker, and is most at home fishing in the Gulf. I think I can safely say, though, that his that biggest highlight in life was marrying his wife Kerstin and raising their daughter Heidi. He never tired of talking about their activities and achievements. His love and pride beamed from his eyes every time he spoke of them.
During this tragic time, the only thing the family requested was prayer. Jake has had so, so many prayers said for him. Thanks to all.
Moving forward, we want to make sure that Jake’s family does not have to add bills and expenses to their heartache. Please help them out if you can with a donation.
