Steve's Hope Fund

HOPE

Those who have met my brother Steve all compare the same notes.  They speak of someone so kind, friendly -- always positive and always with a smile. They talk of Steve, the fitness buff, running throughout Squirrel Hill, stopping only to flash a huge grin and say hello. . He woke most days at 4:30 AM to jog to work at his job in the downtown PNC call center.  He was a burst of energy at the local synagogues, JCC and community events.

Steve’s enthusiasm continues to shine despite suffering a massive stroke in January, 2013. The stroke left him paralyzed on the left side..  Nothing has changed in his enthusiasm, and he still remains positive as he zips around in his electric wheelchair.  He is a fixture at the JCC and is determined to walk on his own again. No one has seen such will and drive!

Steve’s devoted wife Mimi has a chronic illness and is currently unable to live at home.   Steve is assisted by his college age son, Jacob, a beloved member of the community.  Jacob juggles work and college, all while acting as his dad’s primary caretaker.

I have worked hard to find future safe housing and personal services to assist Steve at home.   Some services are beginning to come through.  The goal is to keep Steve out of a nursing home. This would be devastating to him at age 58 and kill his spirit, which continues to be so upbeat with all the adversity he faces.

I was blessed to be approached by a few guardian angels in the Squirrel Hill community who see Steve’s struggles first hand.  They also knew about his loss of income due to Steve no longer being able to work and his medical debt, college and other expenses. These same angels who have given of themselves tirelessly have offered to raise money to create an emergency fund to assist with basic expenses to help get Steve get back on his feet. The kindness of this community has overwhelmed me. They have suggested a secure savings account be set up in Steve’s name. They told me that it is an inspiration to see Steve’s motivation to get better.  The goal of this fundraiser is to ease his burden. The smallest things make such a difference,   including a hot nutritious meal which gives him strength and keeps that smile on his face.
