Joe is truly a miracle child.
When he was born, his airway opening was the size of a pinhole and doctors did not think he would survive the ambulance ride to the children’s hospital in Detroit. They could not intubate him at Oakwood hospital in Dearborn, Michigan where he was born. Joe was baptized before being transported.
Not only did he live, but he was able to avoid suffering any type of brain damage or developmental delays. However, he still has a lot of challenges facing him. He has a stent in his airway right now that is holding it open so he can breathe easily. Due to this, his voice is weak because his vocal cords don’t work quite right. If the doctors try to fix his vocal cords it may make his breathing worse.
Joe has a very severe version of Micrognathia and Pierre Robin Sequence. He had a tracheostomy until he was 3 years old and also had surgery on his jaw and his sternum. The doctors at Cincinnati Children’s Hospital built him a new airway using rib cartilage. Just last year, he had to be rushed to Cincinnati hospital because he was having trouble breathing and they were concerned for his life for almost a week.
Joe's mother, Janine, is a single parent who went back to school in the midst of all of this to become a nurse. His brother, Nick, works to cover the cost of college and helps out with whatever he can. This situation is unfortunate, but Joe is staying positive and is an outgoing and happy child!
The cost of these necessary surgeries are piling up and the Pi Kappa Alpha fraternity of Toledo, Ohio, would like to ease that stress for Joe's family. All donations will be graciously given to the Glinn family.
