My name is Akili I have over 45-years of experience and history as a labor, community organizer and political leader. I have dedicated my life to racial and social justice. I'm a member of Black Lives Matters-Los Angeles, the Black Community Clergy & Labor Alliance and the Institute of the Black World 21st Century.
Recently I was arrested at the Los Angeles Police Commission LAPC meeting. Because I spoke out on the treatment of one of the members of the public and Black Lives Mstters activist who was being admonition and warned about acting “out” by the President of the Commission before the meeting started.
I rejected that position and spoke up about it I didn’t feel this was the proper way to talk to a member of the public who was there to engage in their civic duty.
The LAPC meeting are very uninviting and intimidating to the public. The meetings are held weekly at 9:30am at the LAPD building in down town LA, the room is full of LAPD and Commissioners don’t even pay attention to public comments.
I was targeted and use and example of what will happen if community people want to speak up and take positions.
I had to pay my bail to get out that evening, another tactic LAPD uses to deter comments and actions. I go back to court March 1, 2016
I'm asking all my friends and people who support justice, democracy and police accountability to make a contribution to my bail fund that we have set up. It’s important and very easy, follow the instructions. My goal is to raise $2000.00.
As we continue to fight back and demand justice and accountability and an end to the killing of Black people and people of color around the country there will be a critical need for support to keep the movement going, do your part TODAY, make a contribution.
