Mark Waller's Get Well Fund
Mark is one of the most generous human beings alive; a dedicated giver, active in the community both for tirelessly providing his paintings and time to charities in Australia and overseas, clubs and schools as well as inspiring our kids and adults through teaching karate and painting.
In a shocking turn of events Mark was taken into hospital on the 19th May where a brain tumour was discovered. He was hospitalised the day after his solo exhibition in WA closed and the day before a series of sell-out workshops in WA’s south-west. His wife and daughters immediately flew over from their NSW home to be by his side.
On Monday 23rd Mark had surgery to remove the tumour, results from pathology are yet to come. At this point in time the future is very uncertain. Like most artists, Mark doesn't have income protection and only he can produce his magic on canvas.
All money raised will go towards assisting his family's needs whilst they need to stay in WA (uncertain for how long), providing income for his family during Mark's rehabilitation and to enable his business to keep operating during this period of uncertainty.
Mark is extremely positive and is absolutely determined to be well again. He is a fiercely tenacious individual and if anyone can beat this, he can.
On behalf of Mark and his family, I thank you all for your shining positivity, thoughtfulness and kindness during this time. It means so much to all of us that you would consider donating. If you can't donate please consider sharing this campaign to your networks - we really appreciate it.
Thank you so much. Frankie x
Mark had his results back yesterday from a PET and CT scan on Monday.
It’s amazing news, which even surprised the oncologist! Following on from the radiation treatment he had in January, the larger tumour in one lung that was targeted is now showing only a tiny level of activity - they call it almost a complete response. The other two small tumours in the other lung are no longer active. His brain is still clear and no other metastasis were found in other organs.
He will continue immunotherapy for another 6 months (every 6 weeks instead of 3) and will have another PET scan then. If it is the same as this one, they won’t do any further treatment!! We are so incredibly lucky to have access to these breakthrough treatments.
Thank you all so much for your continual love and support. We couldn't have got this far without you! There’s still more of this journey, however Mark, Nic and his family (and I) are simply over the moon at this latest news :)
Frankie, Mark and Nic, and family :)
Since then Mark’s immunotherapy treatment has been continuing every three weeks. One of his lung tumours has grown a little, after initially shrinking. So he’s going to have this tumour shot in the face with a few stereo tactic radiation treatments early in the new year. The results of this treatment will not be known until scans a few months later. The oncologist suggests that this treatment can often kickstart the immune system again, which would be a great outcome.
Mark is excited, as he firmly believes he will end up with a(nother) superpower from the exposure to radiation.
Seriously though, he is behaving “normally” (for him), and is keeping active with surfing and karate, as well as painting prolifically and continuing to enjoy sharing truly, truly terrible jokes.
He remains very positive and continues to enjoy life as he always has. Probably more so.
As always, Mark, Nic and his family are truly grateful for your ongoing support. It really is so humbling, and makes such a difference to everyone. So THANK YOU!

An update on Mark for you - It has been a while since the last update I’m sorry - life has been really busy; in a good way though.
In May Mark had another CT scan which has again come back with further fantastic news - the two tumours in his lungs have continued to shrink. He, Nic and his family are very happy at this news, and we would all like to thank you once again for your continued positivity and support.
Mark has recently jumped back into teaching regular workshops and classes, and is determined to spread kindness, light and joy around the planet. He gets quite emotional when talking about receiving your support and kindness, and that is as sure as hell what he is going to do now - spread that support and kindness back around. He has almost finished writing about his journey, stay tuned for that one :)
As the realities and challenges of living with cancer become apparent, he is more and more grateful for your continued kindness and support. As always, Mark and his family are completely humbled and overwhelmed at the continual outpouring of love and generosity from you. We thank you.

Mark continues to revel in and explore his newly revealed “purpose”, and has recently felt compelled to write about his journey. He continues to enjoy living in the moment, painting heaps, being in the water a lot, and also starting to teach workshops again.
Mark’s immunotherapy treatment will continue until 2018, and he will continue to have regular scans on the brain and torso, and regular appointments will medical specialists to monitor his progress.
Once again, we are all so grateful for your continued kindness and support. Mark and his family are completely humbled and overwhelmed at the continual outpouring of love and generosity from you. We thank you.
