My students are the embodiment of determination. Many of them come to school from situations that no child should ever experience: violence, extreme poverty, foster care, families living in separate homes and in separate countries. These are only some of the challenges they face, but it is their daily reality. The students at Olney Charter High School are amazing, resilient individuals, living in a high crime, high poverty city. Because of this, many do not have the means to travel outside of Philadelphia to experience learning outside of the classroom.
This trip unifies student learning in both History and ESL classes.
Gettysburg stands out as a turning point in the war, but also as the bloodiest battle in the deadliest war in American history. It is a part of our heritage, state, and national history. Our students often have a lot going on in their lives and it can be difficult for them to fully comprehend the significance of events that happened hundreds of years ago. However, Gettysburg is an important and worthwhile experience because this battle shows our students how divided our country once was over issues of race and liberty, and allows them to reflect on how far we have come, and where our next areas of progress may be.
The students in learn about fairness, equality, and responsibility to self, and responsibility to others through literary exploration. Students will be reading cross-curricular text bridging literature and history. The texts the students will be reading will deal with how the townspeople came together to support one another after the battle in July. Additionally, the students will be reading about how the soldiers from opposite sides still came together to help one another with basic needs even though they were fighting one another.
By experiencing Gettysburg first-hand, students will have the opportunity to connect their learning to conflicts in the past with current political issues and events in the real world.
