A father, friend, brother, and die hard Steelers fan needs your help right now.  Jeff ‘Swede’ Swedenhjelm, age 40, had been traveling around southeast Asia the last 12 months when, on December 18th, he had a terrible accident, falling over 30 feet from the roof of a pavilion as he was attempting to retrieve his favorite Steelers hat from a thieving monkey in Bali, Indonesia. The fall happened during a six hour walk, after he lost the keys to his scooter, to a bar that he knew would be airing the highly anticipated week 15 showdown between the Pittsburgh Steelers and the New England Patriots.  Villagers found Swede unconscious on the ground and immediately transported him to the nearest hospital.  The fall left Swede in a coma for 6 hours and fractured and displaced his C6 vertebrate rendering him paralyzed from the chest down.
Swede's family and friends rallied to raise enough money to get him an emergency medevac flight to Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia and to pay for his surgery.  He is currently in the ICU at a hospital in Malaysia recovering from the surgery and fighting off a bad lung infection. We have exhausted the funds that have been raised up to this point and desperately need to raise more money to pay for his expensive ICU stay as well as his intensive rehab.  As of now he has not reagained any movement or sensation that was lost so we know that this is going to be a long, hard road back to recovery for Swede.  We are confident that his positive outlook and determination are going to get him back on his feet again.  We just need your help to facilitate that.

Thank you everyone who has donated to Swede's recovery efforts. The amount of money that has been raised so far is a true testament to the love that exists in this world. It is so incredible to see people come together and give help to someone who desperately needs it. Many of the individuals who have donated have never met Swede, yet they were willing to give to a complete stranger. So for that, from the bottom of our hearts, we say thank you.

We still have a long way to go with Swede's recovery efforts as he is not yet able to leave the hospital due to a terribly resistant infection not to mention he is still paralyzed in both his hands as well as from his chest down.

The money we have raised, up to this point, was able to pay for his medevac flight, his surgery, and over a month in the hospital. Unfortunately, we are just about out of money and are scrambling to raise more funds to keep him here in good hands so that one day Swede will be able to not only walk again but live an active life again!

We have started a new GoFundMe Page (link below) to kick off phase II of Swede's recovery campaign. If you'd like to stay up on his progress, please follow the Help Swede Walk Again FB page (link below) or keep checking up on his new GoFundMe page. Please feel free to share the page and donate to it as you can.

One of Swede's favorite sayings has proven itself to be true, 'We're all in this together!"

Update: I’m back to sharing good news with all of you this morning... Swede has shown improvements over the last 36 hrs. We narrowly avoided getting him admitted back into the ICU and I think that bit of positive news had an effect on Swede, cause his improvements started to show pretty much immediately after. Since my last update, Swedes tube for his tracheotomy has been removed and a cap put in its place, allowing him to talk with his normal voice again! His fever has broke and the phlegm that he’s felt dripping from his nasal cavity and filling his lungs has subsided. He even was able to cough up some phlegm from his lungs and spit it out. I know that sounds gross but it’s a big deal as it shows his chest muscles are functioning better.

Swede also had the pleasure of a visit from a guy who has been following his story on-line. Richard, who’s in the pics with Swede, has lived in Bali for 10 Years and travels to Malaysia from time to time. He hit us up when he was headed this way and dropped by the hospital. Swede had a great chat with him and it really showed him how much support he has in his corner. It’s something to read comments on-line from complete strangers but to meet them in person and see first hand the love and support that so many have is extremely humbling.

Now for all of Swedes family, friends, and even those that have never met him but are faithfully following his story, we still need your help. In the first couple weeks after Swede’s fall, everyone rallied together, as time was of the essence, to get him medevac’d out of Bali and into surgery at a hospital that was equipped to handle his injuries. We had to raise $32k for the flight and $37k for the surgery and hospital acceptance. We’ve added an additional $12k to the hospital to buy some more time here but our funds are dwindling. His daily expenses were very high when he first got to the hospital but as his condition has been improving they have been going down. If we run out of money, the hospital will discharge him. It’s that serious! We need all of your help to raise some more funds. So please, please, please share his gofundme page and donate if you are able. Even small donations add up to get us to where we need to be. Swede really is in awe about all the support that has been brought his way and we hate to ask for more but this is the situation we’re in. Love to all of you reading this!

Update: Good news to report! Swede is making positive progress every day. He had the oxygen machine removed 2 days ago, was allowed to eat soft foods yesterday, and has now been moved to a chair so that he can start the next level of rehab today. He has not yet gained any movement or feeling below his chest but his lung infection is clearing up and responding (finally) to the antibiotics. Because of this improvement I am so happy to say that Swede will be relocating to the rehabilitation ward and out of the ICU either today or tomorrow!! We’ve been waiting for this moment for weeks! He will be more focused on his rehabilitation efforts from here on out so we should start seeing progress on that front. We are just about out of money and the hospital is requiring us to keep a positive balance in order for Swede to stay in the hospital here. It will be much cheaper per day having him out of the ICU but we are still in need of raising some funds. Please keep sharing the gofundme page, donating when and if you are able to and sending your love his way. And always remember, ‘We’re all in this together!’

Update: Swede is feeling much better as of yesterday. His boy Boogie (Justin Bailey) paid a visit and brought him a new #steelers hat and his favorite #boarshead pepperoni stick. And on top of that his girl, Mika (Miegale Miegale) made it here from Bali for a 5 day visit. The staff here at the hospital is astounded at the response from his friends, both online and in-person. Most of the nurses and doctors follow his story on FB and seeing all the love sent his way has blown their minds. Now on to medical stuff... his assisted breathing tube has been removed and replaced with a small vapor tube attached to his trache, as he is able to maintain great gas exchange in his lungs on his own. His mucus in his lungs is now white, which means the infection is clearing up. He still has secretions in his lungs that create fluid buildup which needs to be suctioned out on a regular basis but his condition has definitely improved. He will remain in the ICU with the trache installed until he regains muscle function in his chest muscles that are responsible for making him cough. With those muscle still paralyzed he can not cough the flem out of his lungs so staying in the ICU is necessary. Thank you all for your continued support and love in all of this. I have read many of your messages to him and he is humbled by all the encouraging words sent his way so keep them coming! The medical bill is getting quite high as he has remained in ICU longer than expected, so please share his gofundme page, which is hyperlinked below, and donate when and if you are able to. Remember ‘We’re all in this together!’
