Help get FIRST team 589 Falkon Robotics to the Houston World Championship!

Crescenta Valley High School FIRST Robotics team 589 is a team of 110 of 9th‐12th grade students who have six weeks design and build a complex 120‐pound robot. From concept to welding to programming, the students do the work, with guidance from mentors. This robot competes against over 40 other teams at regional competitions worldwide.

At the Orange Country regional, team 589 won the coveted Regional Engineering Inspiration Award, giving them spot at the World Championship Wednesday April 19 to Saturday April 22. They need your help to get there.

Team 589 is different than many other like teams, as they are all inclusive. They do not turn down any student, and do not collect club dues. This allows anyone to be a part of this family. At the same time, this makes attending events like the World Championships more complicated.

The team is hoping to raise $10,000 to help cover airfare and lower hotel costs for 20 students. With your help, they will be able to attend this once in a lifetime opportunity, allowing them to benefit from the work they have put in.

The Falkon's mission is to enable future engineers with the skills they need to succeed and to inspire them by promoting creativitiy, teamwork, and philabthropy.

They maintain a supportive culture through a second family approach. Through FLL programs and outreach events, they inspire others and, in turn, facilitate self-insight. These activities help them grow their team, grow as a team, and encourage members of the community to become involved in STEM. The team collaborates with their mentors to further improve their technical capabilities, building on their solid foundations with innovative design features at appropriate risk levels.

Team 589, though, is more than just about building robots. They build good humans. From mentoring Girl Scouts FIRST Lego League teams, to volunteering to sort canned food drives, the Falkons know that supporting their community is just as important as the competition.

The 589 mentors are no exception. Lead mentor Lyn Repath-Martos is an extraordinary part of the team, as well. Lyn has risen from the parent of a team member to the mother of the team. At each regional competition, teams can nominate one mentor and submit an essay explaining how they lead, inspire and empower using excellent communication skills. At the Ventura regional, Lyn became a Woodie Flowers Award finalist, recognizing her commitment to the team. She will be competing against other mentors from the other regionals at the Championship.
