Nick Ashill, an ultra-marathon runner from New Zealand, was living his dream, running across America, 3,355 miles from Los Angeles to New York raising money for the Pulmonary Fibrosis Trust. Nick’s mum died of pulmonary fibrosis in 2015 so it is a charity that Nick is deeply passionate about. He understands that people and families with pulmonary fibrosis need practical, emotional and financial help. Now Nick needs this from all of us.

In the second week of May 2017 Nick started his run in Los Angeles and followed the historical Route 66 before veering off at Illinois, through Indiana and Ohio. With only 572 miles to go, Ohio is where the run ended for Nick as he was involved in a serious hit and run accident and left badly injured in a ditch on the side of the road. Miraculously Nick was speaking to his wife Sarah in Cyprus when the accident happened and Sarah was able to alert his support crew and get the emergency help he needed. You may have seen the news reports about Nick’s accident. (Please see links below)

Nick was left with compound fractures to his leg and serious fractures to his pelvis and the doctors say, is very lucky to be alive. He unfortunately had a set back with a perforated bowel and a serious infection and to date has had 5 major surgeries. The cost of medical care grows daily. His rehabilitation is due to take about 6 months in Ohio and Nick needs your help. Once Nick is out of hospital he needs to go through intensive rehab and needs help with the daily cost of living: rent, groceries, transport and most importantly a paid carer. These costs could be more than half a million dollars.

Nick says he wanted his run to “Inspire ordinary people to do extraordinary things and to never be afraid to dream big”. This is an extraordinary situation and now Nick needs your help.

All donations, big and small will help Nick get back on his feet and back to his wife and four daughters. Thank you for “helping Nick to get back on his feet”.

Funds will be used for hospital and medical bills, rehabilitation costs and aids. Nick and his family also need to pay for the day to day life costs of rent, food, petrol, power, phone while being in America. They may need to hire a care giver.

Hi Everyone,
Tomorrow August the 2nd, marks a year since Nick was hit by that driver in a pick up truck on the 2nd of August in Ohio. The case sadly has been closed and the driver has never been identified - but I’m sure someone knows something!
On Sunday Nick had his 10th surgery and it’s the 7th surgery to repair his bowel and we hope this is the last one! The surgery has gone as planned and we now begin the post surgery recovery which we've come to know well with plenty of bone broth, soft vegetables and rest! I'll keep you posted.
Thank you all for your support, kind thoughts, love and wishes!

Hi Everyone,
The team at Go Fund Me require me to explain why Keshena Vanek withdrew some of the funds from our Go Fund Me account. Unfortunately I do not have a social security number and can not withdraw funds on Nick's behalf. Keshena agreed to withdraw and transfer the funds to us while we are in Columbus here in America.
We are incredibly grateful for all the support you have given us and it has made such a difference in helping us with some of the day to day costs. Just this week we needed to purchase Nick a special Roko cushion for his wheelchair which was $450, a memory foam topper for the hospital bed we have in the living room ($120), the daily rental of $65 for his CPM machine (passive movement of his legs), along with so many additional daily costs. Our costs grow daily and we are only at the very beginning of Nick's rehabilitation journey.
Thank you to you all so very much for your generosity, love and support. We are both so very grateful! Thank you! All our love, Nick and Sarah
