On March 23rd-24th 2019, the Newport Beach Police Department will be participating once again in the Annual Baker to Vegas Challenge Cup Law Enforcement Relay race.  The race takes approximately 13-16 hours to complete with 20 legs ranging from 5-10 miles each.  The course spans over 120 miles of desert peaks and valleys beginning in Baker, CA, ending on the Las Vegas Strip.

Out of the 280 plus teams competing, the NBPD team has placed in the top 20 overall and placed first in our division for the past 12 years.  Keep in mind that most departments have 500-5,000 officers to choose from for their team of 20 runners but Newport Beach has only 150 perspective runners to choose from. We have a very competitive team and hold multiple try outs to fill these spots. We also have 20 support personnel from our police agency to participate who take care of the ancillary duties necessary for our success.

This event is on a volunteer basis only, the officers and support personnel are not paid to run and do not receive any monetary support from the police department.  In the past, our team has had to do limited fundraising due to generous support from some local residents and businesses. For the last two years, we decided as a team to choose a local charity and donate a portion of the proceeds we raised.  Thanks to the support and generosity of our community we were fortunate enough to donate $1,000 to one of our chosen charities; “The Ben Carlson Memorial Scholarship Foundation.”

In May 2018, Newport Beach Police Officer Jon Jarema was diagnosed with a brain tumor. With his strength, courage, support of his amazing family and his awesome sense of humor, Jon has been fighting through radiation treatments, surgeries and continued chemo therapy. Jon was able to return back to full duty by September and continues his fight.  We only thought it fitting to allow Jon to choose the supported charity for this year. Jon has chosen N.E.G.U “Never Ever Give Up” The Jessie Rees Foundation. The foundation was started in the name of a beautiful and strong little girl, Jessie Rees, who sadly lost her battle with two brain tumors on January 5th 2012 at the tender age of 12 years old.  During her extremely courageous battle she chose to focus on helping kid’s with cancer that were unable to leave the hospital.  That is how “Joy Jars” and N.E.G.U “Never Ever Give Up” were created. Joy Jars are 64 oz jars filled with toys that are delivered to children fighting cancer. Today, Joy Jars are symbols of hope and love in 40 different countries.

The money we raise will not just be going to support the NBPD Running Team but we will be donating a portion to N.E.G.U “Never Ever Give Up” The Jessie Rees Foundation. We hope that you can help our team make this year a success and let us help support such an important organization.
