Our mom is our hero. Three days ago, on January 17th, she was diagnosed with Acute Promyelocytic Leukemia.
Our mom Serena is such an amazing giving, loving human being! From the very beginning of our lives up until this moment, we have only known her as a selfless giver.
She was a doula for refugees from South Sudan. She taught ESL for over 10 years in Saint Louis, and she homeschooled all of her children!
She is a mother, teacher, dancer, wife, and friend.
Two years ago, she and my dad Lenard moved to South Africa to continue spending their lives giving back and loving others. Up until she went to the hospital last week, she taught computer science, programming, and phonics to the teachers, children and domestic workers at the school and orphanage in Mhluzi.

MEDICAL:
Our mom was rushed to the hospital late Friday night after an abnormal blood test. They maxed out credit cards and emptied the bank account just to admit her to the hospital, and for initial testing. Because our mom has an acute case, she is too weak to be moved or flown back here to St.Louis for treatment because of her immune system.
She started her first round of chemo yesterday and is in good spirits...however...
The cost of chemotherapy is high, and the hospital requires payments on a weekly basis.

you can imagine, the treatment is quickly draining funds. We love her so much and are all pitching in. The first round of chemotherapy is $40,000, and we need to make a payment this week.
