The Big Change!

I’m making the change of a lifetime! In fall 2018, I will be moving to Los Angeles to attend the California Institute of the Arts (CalArts) for my MFA in Acting. This rigorous, immersive training includes scene study, voice, movement, speech, stage combat, film acting, Alexander technique, yoga, dance, history, and more foundational and experimental studies of performance. This school and program also allow me the opportunity to take electives and pursue independent projects in writing, directing and producing so I can continue developing a creative career in multiple disciplines, like creating comedy sketches and directing socially relevant theater.

CalArts teaches community/social-justice lenses for their work, and develops multi-disciplinary artists working in everything from experimental media to traditional theater. The school is exciting, cutting edge, and a place where I can explore, play, and discover how to be the most interesting, fulfilled, and relevant artist I am capable of being.

To learn more about my choice to attend grad school in general, and CalArts in particular, read the Artists Statement here:  http://www.brenandwyer.com/blog/headed-to-calarts

I am over the moon to be making this enormous life and career change. But I need your help to make the physical move from Portland to Los Angeles.

What do I need?

I need to raise some money for the physical move to Los Angeles. I am hoping to raise $2,000 which will cover:
- A rental car and gas for a trip to find a place to live (at the end of July)
- The cost of a Pod or Uhaul for moving my possessions (at the end of August)
(yep, that's as far as $2k will stretch)

The expense of moving is turning out to be more than I thought, and on top of the uncertainty and fear I already have about making such a monumental change, the money feels like a huge hurdle.

So, I'm asking if you support me and the work I do, to please help me out.

Why support me?

What I am doing is a huge leap of faith. I believe in my hard work, my talents, and my ability to contribute richly to the world through my art. I believe in performing and media arts as ways to create and reflect identity, value humanity, and connect with others. I wrestle with my own identity, that of my gender, my nation, and of those different than me. I believe what I make as an artist is entertainment, social justice, and connective tissue that reaches between me and you. In a volatile country, and emerging from a difficult personal year surrounding family, loss, and mental health, my art showcases my powerful voice in a time when we need leaders. I consider myself a leader in my fields, one who makes work that is beautiful, funny, and important.

But this move uproots me from my network of collaborators, friends and family, and a steady paycheck and towards a more unstable, but more fulfilling future. I want to start that off with as much strength, certainty and forward motion as possible to set myself up for success.

I am asking for contributions from people who believe in what I do and want to see me grow, do more, and give back through my creations.

Even a small amount helps. I know that many people don't have a lot to give, and that there are many worthy causes. Thank you for being my patron!

Thank you for helping support this valuable step in my career. I hope you see your investment in me pay off with inventive, relevant, funny and poignant work from me in the future.
