Gender-affirming surgery for Amber

Amber Fayefox Kim is a trans woman from Washington state currently working on her computer science degree. She loves Dungeons & Dragons, Death Cab for Cutie, fighting for human rights, and eating chocolate. She is also currently incarcerated in a men’s prison.
Even though Amber has socially transitioned, she has only recently begun physically transitioning, and experiences verbal, physical, and sexual harassment from male inmates and staff because of who she is. The Washington DOC will not transfer her to a women’s prison until she undergoes various gender-affirming surgeries, namely bottom surgery. The Washington DOC will not pay for any of these procedures; they only pay for her HRT.
Getting gender-affirming surgeries will not only allow Amber to be transferred to a women’s facility, but they will allow her to fully live her life as a woman. Gender dysphoria is hard and painful; it induces negative feelings because of her masculine physical features, and it can worsen depression or suicidal thoughts. It is an awful experience to feel as though your body is wrong and you don’t belong in it, and it is made worse every day by being forced to live in a highly gendered, hyper-masculine environment. Hormone replacement therapy has helped, but what will truly help is getting the necessary gender-affirming surgeries and being transferred to a women’s facility.
The procedures Amber is seeking are tracheal shave, laser hair removal, scalp rejuvenation, and bottom surgery. We are raising money for the tracheal shave first, a procedure she should be able to have done in a minimum of six months. We are shooting for $7000 based on quotes from Seattle-based cosmetic surgeons, in addition to the costs owed to the DOC for transporting her to and from the hospital.
