This is my Brother Gary (Ginger as he's better known). Gary has had seven bouts of pneumonia. He now has lung failure type 2 which is a chronic condition that debilitates his life severely. He is on oxygen 24 hours a day and gets very tired. 4 years ago he spent 4 months in intensive care with pnuemonia. Ever since then he has had a great appreciation for life and all the people he cares about. He tells us he loves us all the time and he's always telling the nurses how gorgeous they are. He really is a cheeky chap with a heart of gold!
Gary is 24 but is childlike, having a cognitive impairment of a 5-7 year old. He is such a special character! 4 years ago when he was admitted to hospital with pneumonia, his oxygen saturation was only 17% and he was still singing Red Red Wine through an oxygen mask. (Massive UB40 fan). He never complains ever!
Gary used to play football and liked a game of pool. He loved going to watch Chelsea play with his Dad and going out. He can't do any of that now as this illness leaves him feeling too weak, so much so he now uses a wheelchair if he's not in bed.
The truth is, we don't know how long we've got him for now and the very thought of this makes us want to make every day special for him. The specialist at the hospital told us that he was sorry, there's nothing more he can do for Gary and he cannot give a prognosis. Gary has so many medical needs that there isn't a hospice that can cater for him so we share his care at home. My Parents are simply amazing and deserve some real quality time with Gary too doing something fun.
We would love to take him to Disneyland for a holiday. He is the biggest Toy Story fan and knows the words to every Toy Story movie. He has Buzz and Woody at home but to be able to see them 'in real life' would be an incredible experience for him. There is a Buzz Lightyear ride that has wheelchair access which Gary would love too. Due to medical insurance and Gary's needs (he needs two carers at all times), it is very expensive so I am asking for your help. I am asking if you can help me give him the holiday of a lifetime and to create special memories for him and my family. Thank you all in advance x
