Garrets med bills and rehab

$17,245 of $50k goal

Raised by 445 people in 12 days
Garret was assaulted outside his job in downtown Huntington Beach by two men on March 10, 2017. He refused to give them free pizza, they waited outside for him, pulled him in to an alley and almost beat him to death. He had emergency brain surgery at Hoag hospital with a large piece of his skull being removed and the rest of his brain severely bruised and damaged.

Thankfully HBPD was very quick and arrested both men. One of the men has already been bailed out.

We are still waiting to see if he will wake up, if he does, he faces months and possibly years of rehabilitation, psych. counseling, and medical bills!! Not to mention livin expenses etc.

Gofunme asked that I add a little information about myself in case anyone was curious. My name is Katelin! I am 26 years old and I am Garret's good friend of the last 7 years and also his roommate. I have spent most of my life in Huntington Beach and I have a very strong connection to this city. Since this is Garret's money I have no idea how he will want to spend it! He will probably want to blow it all buying his dog Rosie a new mansion dog house.  But my guess would be living expenses and paying off any bills he incurrs at this time.  All of the donations accepted at this time are in Garret's name and nobody has access to them except for him!

Thank you everyone for continuing to show support. I honestly never thought the gofundme would get this big. It is incredible!

Garret was moved out of ICU!!! He's in a regular room to recover, is still undergoing therapy and is speaking and conversing with family and staff. The feeding tube was removed and he's eating on his own; his appetite is back! Still suffering with some major immediate memory loss but getting better everyday. Things are looking up, thank you everyone for the support.

Here is a little back ground about Garret:

Garret is the type of person who is happy all the time. He draws people in and makes friends with everyone. He never has a negative thing to say about anyone and is basically a giant teddy bear. In fact, I don't think I have ever heard anyone speak negatively of Garret either. He is the definition of a ladies man and a gentleman.

He grew up in the Newport area and has lived in Huntington Beach/Costa Mesa for the last 10 or so years.

I have known Garret for the last 7 years and I have watched him grow in to an amazing man. Not perfect by any means but he is always there to help when someone needs it. He is strong and independent and kind.

Thank you everyone for the support!

I'm so sorry to hear about this young man's serious condition. Workers' comp must cover 100% of medical and disability costs. This includes rehabilitation expense. Friends and family members of this young man need to make sure the pizza place has reported to the workers' comp insurance company so that he is taken care of.

Hi everyone! I am Garret's aunt and would like to thank all of you for your prayers, love and support! Garret suffered a severe traumatic brain injury early Saturday morning - he was in a coma but woke up and has been in and out of sedation. Up until today, when he wakes up, it's as if he is still going through the violent attack. So they had to keep him sedated. He's in a lot of pain and discomfort from the attack and the surgery. The attack resulted in three hematomas and a skull fracture. He woke up a few times yesterday, but keeping him in a sedated state let's the brain heal comfortably. Today, he is more alert and responsive to family and staff. Multiple therapies have been started in order to aid in his recovery. A feeding tube was inserted Wednesday to meet his nutritional needs. We met with the medical staff to determine what to expect next and in the future. His recovery will be a long road but family remains hopeful. We will be posting more as we know more. If you'd like to follow Garret's progress, we will be posting here as well as at @GetWellGarret Facebook page. Thank you again! Aunt Kelly

I hope they have workers compensation insurance at his place of employment. Smaller businesses don't always. I didn't see any mention of where he worked. Prayers and good thoughts go to him and his loved one. May God guide those caring for him.

So sorry to hear of such a brutal act on a decent employee. Garrett should be covered by worker's compensation, as well. That should help offset some of the medical costs.

God bless you during this difficult time, and may these thug, despicable, self-entitled losers rot in jail for decades. Thankfully, God says, in Deuteronomy 32:35, "It is mine to avenge; I will repay. In due time their foot will slip; their day of disaster is near and their doom rushes upon them.” You are in our prayers, my brother. Keep the faith, stay strong, and get well. Going to donate right now.

Work comp only will pay 2/3 of his regularly earned wages. Work comp medical coverage is largely initiated by the employee. This man is in a coma due to an after hours / off the clock incident. Please, people do not expect he will receive a windfall from work comp benefits. There's an approval process for work comp. I hope he has family involved to advocate where they typically don't allow non family to. I hope this room mate of his is able to maintain their apartment in his absence. Maybe a gofundme for just his rent ?

The news article says this happened when he went outside to take a break, Huntington Beach police say he got into a physical altercation with the suspects that left him unconscious. The restaurant should surely assist with his recovery. Not that it matters if they do or do not assist. Giving should come from the heart -- no matter what someone else is able to do. This could be anyone's husband, father, brother or son lying here. God Bless you Garrett.

Garret sounds like a great young man.... but you seriously think he may "blow the money on his dog, Rosie"?? Our prayer is that he gains strength and that he is able to heal completely from injuries due to this horrific event. ...and that the money will be used wisely in his effort to support himself during his long recovery.

It is not a given that workers comp will be required to pay for this. If it happened after he clocked out and was on his way home it is iffy. Let's hope it does, but don't count on it, give as if it won't.

This is so unfortunate and sad. And over pizza. Unlucky for Garrett, if he was leaving work, already off the clock, the com. he is employed by doesn't have to cover him. If I read it correctly it happened off the property in an alley, so again the company has no obligation to step up. (and take the moral high road here). You would think since the event did spawn off of something he was doing to protect the wellbeing of the restaurant, the owners will do the right thing here and assist with monetary costs. I surely hope so. God give Garrett strength to heal.
