Brianna Pulliam   ROCHESTER, MI
Gage Garmo,  was diagnosed with bone cancer his Freshman year at Rochester High School.  Throughout his highschool career, he underwent multiple surgeries and chemo therapy.  Cancer wasn't enough to hold him down. He was a fighter who didn't want Cancer to take over his life. His senior year he joined the Rochester High School varsity football team, #32. Gage is a very selfless man. He puts everyone before himself and cares about others. Prior to his Senior year, a tough decision was made to amputate his leg hoping to finallly stop the cancer.  Unfortunately, it was not enough.  The cancer had spread to his lungs and progressed at an uncontrollable rate.  Now, just a few months shy of graduation he has been given only days to live. Gage's family has never asked for anything other than warm thoughts and prayers.  The entire Senior Class of '15 wants to do more.  Please join us by giving to the Garmo family.

Update 2

I'd like to start by thanking everyone for their generous donations and overwhelming support for the Garmo family. It is evident that Gage touched so many lives and was loved by so many.

Because of the National attention Gage's story has received, I've been asked to provide more information about who I am and my relationship to Gage. So here goes...I moved to Rochester in the 5th grade and Gage was one of the first kids to introduce himself. I knew instantly that we would be forever friends. The next 8 years we did typical kid stuff, movies, bon fires, raiding the fridge at each others house, etc. We had our ups and downs, but our bond was never broken.

I love you Gage, may you rest in peace.

Hello. I'm so sorry for ur loss. Ur whole family is I. My thoughts, and will keep Gage in my thoughts. My 10yr old nephew was recently diagnosed with Osteosarcoma in his knee and spread to his lungs. He had surgery within a month n had a Rotationplasty Which removed his knee. It also spread to his lungs and is now on chemotherapy. Because of that, this story touched my heart. May Gage rest in peace

My sympathies to the Garmo family. Gags's story is much like that of another osteosarcoma fighter, Zach Sobiech. Please look Zach up and find what he did and his family and friends still do to raise funds for osteosarcoma research. You can find the info at www.childrenscancer.org. This is a very highly rated charity where almost all funds go to childrens cancer. I donate regularly to this and St Judes. No child should suffer from or die of cancer.

Kufe D, Hehlmann R, Spiegelman S: Human sarcomas contain RNA related to the RNA of a mouse leukemia virus. Science 1971, 175:182-185. Mikovits A, Snyderman M: Anti-retroviral drugs used to treat a patient with chronic lymphocytic leukemia and cancer-related fatigue. ASCO Proceedings, 2013: e22039. I post these two references that indicate that a mouse virus that has infected our species participates in the development of advanced cancer and that the cancer can respond to the same antiviral drugs used for HIV. I am an medical oncologist and a cancer survivor and these drugs have helped as per the abstract above. This would be considered experimental therapy but the antiviral drugs have been well tolerated in treatment of HIV. Michael Snyderman, MD mcs@buffalo.edu
