Taylor Whitney was smart, funny, quiet, confident and an amazing friend. He was the type of person that put others before himself (e.g., helping with school work or trying his hardest to make us laugh). I have not forgotten his life, the experience of losing him and the lessons that followed. Nine years have passed, but Taylor continues to influence who I am and benefit me in ways that only he could. I owe a great deal to his family, our friends and all the relationships that have grown apart over time.
Thank you all very much! The gardens are a platform to remember Taylor and I look forward to seeing where this project takes us.
Landscapes are designed, experienced and communicated; our engagement with them is a process of negotiating meaning. For me, the Taylor Whitney Student Gardens mean a great deal. In addition to the relationships I hope to rekindle, I have spent five years maintaining student properties, and one year researching and laying the groundwork for these gardens. Unfortunately, I have never grown my own food, and I am very excited to start. I invite all of you to join us this long weekend or anytime throughout the summer.
The Taylor Whitney Student Gardens is a model for urban agriculture in student yards . Two rental properties in Guelph are being farmed this summer by community volunteers. Through my research I have proven that the gardens are 'sustainable', i.e., they integrate economic, social, political and intellectual approaches to design, and will therefore be able to endure changes over time. In addition, individuals, especially adolescents, learn from their surroundings. Therefore, the gardens may educate students about locally grown food and encourage pro-environmental behaviours.
After our first year, the gardens will be able to support themselves. To get this project off the ground however, I am asking that you please help fund:
- Compost bins (x2)
- Rain barrels (x2)
- Raised planters
- Soil (amount tbd)
- Tree removal
- Water bills (for the first summer $)
- Plaques (x2)
Thank you very much!
