Galloway Suit Defense Fund

$72,982 of $100,000 goal

Raised by 973 people in 4 months
On October 29, 2018, Christie Blatchford published an article in the National Post  stating that Steven Galloway was suing a total of 20 individuals, including the woman who had initially accused him of sexual assault, for defamation of character. The article publicly outed the woman formerly known only as the Main Complainant, and also named several other individuals in the CanLit community. According to the article, the claim seeks 'unspecified general, special and aggravated damages and a permanent injunction “requiring the defendants to remove the defamatory words from the internet and every other public postings” and restraining them from any further publishing.'

This fundraiser has been set up to help defray some of the initial legal expenses for the defendants. All monies received from this fundraiser will go directly toward the legal costs incurred for the case.

The legal and emotional stress for the defendants in this case will be high, and will add to what has already been an ongoing ordeal. I am hopeful, however, that the outpouring of support for the defendants which has already occurred online and in person can help to assure them that they aren't alone in this fight, and that there are many in the CanLit community who support them wholeheartedly.

This specific fundraiser is the first in what will be a series of fundraising initiatives, of both the online and in-person variety. The goal for this initial fundraiser will be to help with initial costs; as there will be longer-term costs as well, larger fundraising initiatives are in the process of being put in place. I will post updates on any additional fundraising measures as they arise. I am in contact with the lawyers involved in representing some of the defendants, and working with GoFundMe to determine the best route for the funds to ensure that they are distributed fairly and with maximum impact.

Please read and share this initiative as widely as you can, and consider contributing if you are in a position to do so. My hope is that all who are named in the suit can know how much we need their voices and their words--with your help, we can remind them all how loved and valued they are.

Please contact me at canlitdefensefund@gmail.com if you would like to talk about donating via an alternate method.

I am a writer myself and part of the Canadian literary community, and I've been heartened to see the response to this campaign in the short time that it's been up. Let's be there for one another, friends. Hugs and strength to all.

Hello everyone,

Thank you again for all of your help and support with this campaign. We will shortly begin the process of distributing funds from the GoFundMe. The campaign will remain open for the foreseeable future, so you are welcome to continue donating.

As per instruction and guidelines from GoFundMe, I am updating the campaign to reflect the process of fund distribution. As there are twenty-five individuals named in the suit, and as the costs for each individual will vary according to the nature of their case, the aim of fund distribution will be to give funds in a way that is both equitable and ensures as much impact as possible. To that end, a Board has been established to oversee funding requests from all parties and allocate the funds where necessary.

The Board consists of three individuals:

Amanda Leduc -- starter of the GFM campaign
Andrew Wilmot -- a writer and editor
Melanie Lefebvre -- a writer and artist

Defendants have been counseled by their legal teams to refrain from commenting or participating directly in tertiary matters relating to the suit, including the fundraising campaign. As such, an ADVOCATE for the defendants, A.H. Reaume, will liaise with the defendants and bring their individual requests to the Board for consideration.

A bank account in my name has been set up as an informal trust for the funds. Due to the anonymous nature of some of the defendants, it was not possible to set up a legal trust. Funds from the GoFundMe will be withdrawn to this bank account and money will be sent to the defendants from this account. Any withdrawals from this account will be undertaken after consultation and decision from the Board.

The Main Complainant in the previous UBC investigation is the first person named in the suit. It is anticipated that her legal costs will likely run much higher than the costs of others involved in the suit. As such, in keeping with the goal of distributing the money in as equitable and maximum impact a manner as possible, it has been decided to allocate one-third of the campaign funds to the Main Complainant. The remaining two-thirds of campaign funds will be distributed as equitably as possible among the remaining twenty-four defendants.

Several defendants have indicated via the advocate that they are receiving pro bono or reduced fee help, and as such may not require as much funding as other defendants. If this turns out to be the case, any leftover funds from their respective allocations will be kept in the main campaign pool for re-distribution.

I will update the campaign with every respective withdrawal to indicate where the money goes. Out of respect for the defendants each notice of withdrawal will contain their initials only.

Thank you again for all of your help and support. I have been told that your support has meant the world to the defendants, and I am so pleased that we've been able to provide at least a little bit of light in what has been a most difficult time.

Hello, lovely people. I am once again so unbelievably heartened by your responses and support for the defendants. It’s time to go for a big push, so I’ve raised the goal amount to $100,000. I’ve been bowled over by what we’ve managed to do in two days, so I’ve no doubt that this momentum can continue. Please keep sharing and promoting the campaign, and let’s shoot for the stars! You’ve all shown us what is possible when we come together as a community in support of those we love.

With gratitude and hope,

Hi everyone—WOW. Three hours in and we’ve already surpassed our initial goal! You’re amazing! Please keep sharing and spreading the word about the campaign. There is a long road ahead and more funds will likely be needed for future legal expenses, so I will look to increase the goal very soon. In the meantime: THANK YOU SO MUCH!
