Gaelynn Lea's New Full-Length Album
$31,620 of $30,000 goal
My name is Gaelynn Lea, and I am a musician from Duluth, Minnesota. I am also a public speaker and disability advocate . I have been playing violin for over 20 years and started writing and singing my own songs back in 2011. In March 2016, I was chosen as the winner of NPR Music’s second-annual Tiny Desk Contest for my original song, "Someday We'll Linger in the Sun":
Since then, life has been a busy but delightful whirlwind! This Fall my husband Paul & I sold our home and started touring full-time in our 2002 Ford Econoline. I have performed 150 shows since October 2016 and we've traveled to 37 states so far! I've played in a wide variety of venues: from coffee shops to the House of Blues... from elementary schools to the Kennedy Center! And thanks to your previous generosity on GoFundMe, my husband and I were even able to tour in Europe this past December!
I created this new GoFundMe campaign to raise money for my third full-length album that will be coming out in 2018. The album is going to be a collection of highly personal songs covering themes such as life, death, anger, grace, love and disability rights. This music is a bold new statement straight from my heart and I am so excited to share it with you!
This album is extra special to me because some pretty awesome Minnesota artists are making musical contributions: Al Church, Dave Mehling, Martin Dosh, Andrew Foreman and Alan Sparhawk! Their amazing talents not only fill out the sound, but each player adds a creative energy that is exciting and unique.
To help spread the word about the new album, I released two brand new tracks this November… These songs are only available online and on a *LIMITED EDITION* 7” vinyl until the full-length album comes out next year. Everyone who donates $25 or more will receive a copy of the limited edition vinyl… And each vinyl will be hand-signed by yours truly and all the band members! Don’t have a record player? Fear not, there are other fun gifts for all donation levels!
Better yet, if you donate $25 or more, I will also automatically pre-order the full-length album for you and I will send it to you once it is released! Your support now is crucial to the creation of my next full-length album in 2018 and I want you to be among the fist to experience the result of your contributions!
WHY I AM DOING A GoFundMe CAMPAIGN: I am an independent artist, meaning I do not have the financial support of a label to produce and promote my albums. Putting an album out properly is pretty expensive indeed! While I save up as much as I can to self-release these labors of love, your contributions are what ultimately make my albums possible…. So thank you for your support!
WHAT I NEED TO RAISE: $30,000
WHAT THE MONEY WILL BE USED FOR: The money raised from this GoFundMe will be put towards the release of my full-length album in mid-2018, plus an early bonus gift of two new tracks on a limited-edition 7” vinyl and download card.

MORE ABOUT THE MUSIC:
This past year has been quite the ride, and the train just keeps on rolling! In addition to touring, I have been playing music with a couple of new friends...
A little over a year ago, I played with Al Church for the first time. By happenstance we were booked for the same night at the 331 in Minneapolis, MN. I knew he was a pretty rad musician from the band BBGUN (and we actually went to high school together in Duluth!) so I asked him to sit in with me for a song. Well, one song turned into half a set and half a set turned into two albums! We connected instantly with music and our love of tacos – it’s been so much fun playing with him!
Then one day back in September 2016 I had a gig that required a guitar player and Al wasn’t available. So I racked my brain for someone to fill in… and Dave Mehling came to mind. Dave is also a Duluth-born, Minneapolis-based musician who I’ve been following for years. His band, The Fontanelles, is one of my all-time favorites. Luckily he was available so we had one rehearsal together and played at House of Mercy Church. Again, it was an instant musical brain meld – so much fun!
Anyway, in October I had an epiphany… How cool would it be to join forces with Al Church AND Dave Mehling?!? Lucky for me, they were both on board with the idea! We played our first gig all together at Duluth Homegrown Music Festival this May. This was one of the most special shows of my whole life to date. Alan Sparhawk sat in with us for the performance... He has been a musical mentor to me for the past 6 years in our band The Murder of Crows, and it was a very full-circle moment for me to have him join us. Here's an excerpt from that epic evening:
NEW MUSIC, NEW RECORD!
This year I’ve been on the road a lot, but nonetheless I have managed to write several new songs. My goal became releasing a new full-length album in September 2018. I knew that I wanted to play with Al and Dave on the new recordings, but Dave suggested we try finding a bass player and a drummer as well to fill out the sound.
So Dave asked his friend Andrew Foreman to play bass on the tracks with us. Andrew has done a ton of music over the years, but you may recognize his name from playing in Davina and the Vagabonds (who are amazing, by the way). Then Al Church connected me with Marty Dosh – they’ve done some projects together, such as the Ambassadors of Culture. Marty has also played with the likes of Andrew Bird and also does rad solo sets under his name, dosh.
I am also including three tracks with Alan Sparhawk on the new album... He is a dear friend and a very special part of my musical journey because he introduced me to the looping pedal back in 2011 and played alongside me as I performed my first-ever original song. I am so excited that he will be part of this collaborative album!
The band and I recently finished recording the album at The Pearl Recording Studio in Minneapolis, and it was truly magical. We played, talked, laughed and ate tacos together… and we worked our tails off! Two of the tracks were released on the 7” vinyl this November, and the rest will be included on the full-length album.
Zachary Hollander is the owner of The Pearl Recording Studio and he is the recording engineer for this album. He also he did my last EP, The Songs We Sing Along the Way … He is super fun, talented and very professional, so it was a delight to be back in the studio with him!
It’s hard for me to explain the gratitude and joy I feel about creating this album with such incredibly talented and creative people. Each collaborator is helping me craft the songs in a way that just won’t be possible without them. I am so excited to finish and share this new album with you!
THE NEXT STEPS
All of the songs for this album have been recorded already, but there is still a lot left to do! Next up is editing, mixing, and mastering, then working with a publicist, then pressing the records, printing the CDs and uploading the tracks to iTunes… and then FINALLY the new full-length album can be released into the world in September 2018. In the meantime, I'm touring solo all over the US... hopefully once the full-length album is released there will be more traveling together as a full band! As always, I list all of my upcoming shows here.
Anyway, thank you for all your amazing support over the years! It means so much to me and it allows me to keep moving along on this wild and wonderful musical journey… I will keep you posted as new developments unfold! Take care and keep in touch!
It's been a LONG time since I've posted on here, so first off, many apologies! Paul and I have had the busiest, most traveliest summer to date and so unfortunately my communication has been lacking. Well, Paul and I are finally home for a glorious 10-day stretch, and so now it's time for a much-needed GoFundMe update!
FIRST, the very good news!!! Thanks to YOUR generosity, we EXCEEDED the GoFundMe amount! I am so grateful that such a large and supportive team of humans were willing to gather round me in the creation of this new album... I am sooooo excited for you to hear it! The vinyls and CDs are MADE and have ARRIVED (we literally have 27 boxes in our studio apartment right now) and I just need to get them into your hands!
This brings me to.... the bad news. Today I tried logging into GoFundMe to download the handy-dandy spreadsheet that tells me who donated, when, and where they live. But apparently all the Facebook hacking / Fake News recently caused GoFundMe to update their security policy. So VERY UNFORTUNATELY they've stopped allowing the download of donor information.
I have since emailed tech support and they already replied, saying that they can get me the spreadsheet I need within a week or two.... The only problem is that we leave on September 7th for a three-week release album tour, so this doesn't leave me a lot of time to send out 700 orders.
So I am writing to request a couple things from you:
1) Patience. I am SOOO sorry if there ends up being delays on your GoFundMe prizes. I am going to do everything in my power to get these orders out before September 7th (I am looking into a bunch of different options), but unfortunately there may be some delays. I am really really sorry - who knew a security policy could cause so much turmoil???
2) Any updated addresses since you've placed your initial order. If you have moved since you made your donation, please let me know! The spreadsheet I get from GoFundMe will not reflect a new address.
Again, I am really sorry for this snafu and I will keep you posted in the next couple weeks as to the status of your orders! Regardless, I am really excited to share the new album with you! I am so grateful for your generosity, which made it all possible.
Please reach out with questions or concerns!
I know it's been awhile since I've sent an update, but we've once again been on the road! Paul and I just got back today from a fun run of shows out to Burlington, Vermont and back - including two really neat shows in Canada! I hope to get back up to play for our neighbors in the North once the album is out (and the Winnipeg Folk Fest this July)!
Anyway, we just got home for 8 beautiful days in Duluth before we head to Iceland for the Reykjavik Arts Fest! Before I take a few days to chill, I just wanted to send you a quick update to say two things:
1) Happy Spring! It's FINALLY nice & warm in Minnesota - I hope the weather is lovely wherever you are in the world! This time of year I am always reminded of the beauty of green leaves... Be it ever so fleeting, there's no time like Summer in Duluth!
2) There's only 28 days left on my GoFundMe campaign! I am closing it at 11:59pm on June 18th, the night before the album gets officially announced to the press! My friends at EvrGlo Media made this cool little video for the last fundraising push, and I would really appreciate it if you could share it with your family, friends, co-workers, and anyone else you know with an ear for music! We still have about $6,500 to go, so I can definitely use your help spreading the word!
That's it for now... I hope you are all doing well! Thanks so much for your support, and keep in touch!
I know it's been a very long time since I've written but we've been on the road almost nonstop. However, I wanted to let you know that the album is nearing completion... all the mixing is done, and the mastering will be finalized this week. The graphic designer is finishing up his final drafts, and I am looking for a CD and vinyl replication companies... In other words, it's all coming together! :-)
I just wanted to let you know that if any of your friends or family members are hoping to get their names listed on the album art in the thank you section or in the credits (basically any amount $250 or higher), you should urge them to donate before April 20th. After that I'll need to submit the finalized artwork and music files, so I won't be able to add their names to the album artwork or the credits.

Other than that, life has been good to us on the road! I just had a blast opening for The Decemberists in St. Paul, and now we are heading to Colorado for a few fun shows in Denver, and the filming of my first music video for the new album! So it's a busy month, but a good one!
Hope you are well, and thank you for pre-ordering the album and for your words of encouragement. Please continue to spread the word about this album so we can hopefully reach our goal to cover the costs of this project!
Take care and keep in touch!
I hope you are having a great week! I wanted to share some good news... we just crossed over the $10,000 threshold! So we are making some serious headway in terms of funding the full-length album in 2018... Thank you so much to Harrison Reiner for making the contribution that put us over the edge! :-)
We still have quite a ways to go, so please feel free to share this GoFundMe with anyone who you think might like to receive a copy of the album when it's done! Essentially you folks are pre-ordering the album and helping me to stay out of debt at the same time. :-)
Another fun update is that the album artwork and the mastered tracks are all done for the 7" vinyl. It is coming out on November 10th, 2017... that's less than two months away! I just sent the music in to be pressed at Pirates Press in California, so we are looking good on time! I can't wait for you to hold this little vinyl in your hands and for you to hear the two new tracks... I am so proud of everyone who worked on it.
The 7" vinyl is called "All Changing Tides", and below is a preview of the artwork, done by the amazing Shawn Stigsell at Stigsell Creative in Duluth, Minnesota. The island in this photo is off the North Shore of Lake Superior, which is one of my favorite places in the world.
Other than that, I'm busy playing shows on the road with my husband Paul. We are on our way to Minnesota via Indianapolis, and then heading back out right away to go to Colorado and then Portland! So we won't be home for quite a while, but at least we get to see some nice folks and play some fun shows along the way. :-) Once we get home I'm going to relax for a couple of days and then continue working on the album... bit by bit we will get it done!
Right now we have at least the bare bones of every track done, so I'm starting to think about what order I want to place them in and what other instruments could add some color. There is still a lot left to do, but at least the album is starting to take shape as a whole in a pretty real way... It's an exciting phase of the album project! Dave Mehling, Al Church, Marty Dosh, Andrew Foreman, and Alan Sparhawk have all helped to shape the sound of these tracks and for their talent and artistic input I am extremely grateful. Zachary Hollander at the Pearl Recording Studio in Minneapolis has also been extremely encouraging throughout the process.
Thanks for reading this update... I hope each and everyone of you is doing well! Your support means so much to me... I hope you know how much I appreciate your generosity. At least soon you'll get to hear part of the album (the two songs from the 7" vinyl)... I would LOVE to share the whole thing with you in its rough state, but I know I have to wait! Haha, waiting has never been my strong suit, but I'm sure the time will fly. :-)
I hope you have a great weekend, and I will try to update you again soon! Take care and thanks again for supporting this album and spreading the word!
