Jovana Stokic Fundraiser
$22,312 of $15,000 goal
Several weeks ago, our dear friend and colleague, Jovana Stokic, was attacked while entering the Morgan Street L subway station in Brooklyn. She was knocked unconscious at the top of the staircase, and fell down them, breaking out many teeth and shattering her left elbow. She awoke in the arms of two kind women trying to help her and was rushed to the hospital. Thankfully she sustained no brain damage. She has had emergency surgery including a full replacement of her left elbow and major dental work that is ongoing. Jovana has maintained a positive attitude, is a tough cookie and still has her sense of humor, saying to me that she is now "a bionic woman." Recovery will be ongoing for months, including physical therapy, dental implants and surgery to repair her lip. A second elbow surgery is also looming.
Jovana is very resilient and is working hard to get back to her self, taking care of herself and resuming life as best she can. All that said, there are bills surrounding this horrific experience that she is now forced to worry about. For example, her insurance will not cover the very costly dental implants she needs. She has also had to take cabs to and from many many medical appointments and none of these ancillary costs are covered in any way. It's absurd to me that as a true victim of a senseless act, that now as she deals with pain and recovery, that she is also in such a financial position. To put it frankly, without help, she will not be able to afford dental implants.
Jovana is so well loved and so generous of spirit that her friends and colleagues all want to help and that is exactly why we are organising a medical fundraiser. You can donate directly or purchase listed artwork that a number of wonderful artists have donated for the cause.
We know that this is shocking news and may take a moment to absorb, but again, rest assured that Jovana is taking all the steps she needs to take, within her power, to recover. She is thankful for the outpouring of love and support she has received. It has meant so much and strengthened her resolve. She sends love to you all.

We've concluded our GoFundMe campaign for Jovana today at noon, and are extremely happy to announce that in one week's time, with everyone's amazing help and generosity, a total of $22,312 has been raised.
Every donor has been thanked individually via the campaign platform, however we just wanted to take a moment to send a note to express our gratitude and awe towards the group effort that has made all this possible. Jovana is relieved and can concentrate on her recovery and moving forward. That statement is now true only because of your help, whether it was by spreading the word, donating artwork, making a cash donation, sending sweet notes or energy or all of the above. She is grateful and humbled.
It's been an inspiring period for us and we appreciate all the time and energy from everyone.
At this point, Sara and I will be turning over the delivery of artworks to a capable and generous person who will be in touch with those who have donated works that were purchased through the GoFundMe campaign. They will reach out as appropriate soon.
Her recovery will continue for some time, and she is empowered with knowing her community is behind her and she is not alone.
With deepest gratitude and awe, thank you.
Kate, Sara and most importantly, Jovana
