Dear friends of Daniela,  (versión española más abajo)

This fundraiser initiative is set up to give Laura Daniela Gonzalez Preuss a chance of surviving from a major brain stroke that left her in a coma while traveling alone in Thailand.

The news comes as a shock to all of us who've been lucky enough to come across her tireless generosity and loyal friendship, be it in Argentina, Barcelona, or along her many travels throughout Asia. A super friend and a super host, Daniela is one of those people who make you feel at home whether you're a longtime friend or a newly come visitor. For decades, her terrace in Barcelona has been a crossroads of people coming from the seven corners of the world, meeting and becoming friends while sharing Argentinian "asado" under the starlit sky.

Three months ago, Daniela decided to travel to Koh Phangan, a small island off Ko Samui, in Thailand, where she was going to participate to a project related to tourism and sustainability. Sadly, her experience came to a sudden halt on the night of November 1st when she was woken up by an excruciating headache.

Daniela reached the local hospital at Koh Phangan but doctors there were unable to help. Due to the gravity of the case, she was transferred to the private Bangkok Hospital on the bigger island of Ko Samui, the closest medical facility capable of performing the needed surgery. During that time she lost consciousness and has not woken up since.

Though it took over 20 hours before Daniela could undergo surgery, the operation is said to have gone well. As of now, she remains in a coma, though she has given signs of reacting to stimuli. Doctors are providing her with artificial breathing not to exhaust her body but she is able to breathe on her own, which in itself is a small victory. Now it's just a matter of waiting and hoping while she remains in intensive care.

Sadly, Daniela is not covered for receiving private care, but we managed (thanks to many of you) to pay the bill for her first 2 weeks’ treatment (almost €40 000) before moving her to a public hopistal on Nov 17 (Samui Hospital - see update).

Daniela does not have a partner nor children and her relatives in Argentina cannot cover the costs of the growing bill.

Now that her condition is stable the new challenge is to get her home!!

So while we try to figure out a way forward with the embassies or any other 3rd party, we need your help.

This campaign is an opportunity for all of those who've been impacted by Daniela's kindness to give back at this time of need. If you would like to assist with the financial burden, any donation would be greatly appreciated. All funds raised will go directly to Daniela's medical costs and related travel expenses while she fights to make it through.

On behalf of all the people who love her, we appreciate the outpouring of love, prayers, and support shown over the past few days and undoubtedly, in the months to come.

Thanks a million.

Daniela's friends.

Dear Friends and Donors of Daniela's campaign,

It's been a month a couple of days ago, since Daniela fell into coma. She is still at the Ko Samui Government hospital but it's time for her to move to a more suitable place where she will be able to recover better.

Thinking about long term, Daniela's family is doing every thing possible to move Daniela to Argentina where, in principle, she could receive personalised and free medical attention.

But the transfer to Posadas costs a lot of money (around 100/120,000€) when you don't have any insurance.

So while seeking financial and political support to assume this cost, the family has made the decision to move Daniela asap to a private place in Ko Samui where they will have to equip a room with medical supplies and hire a caregiver/nurse that will be 100% dedicated to the recovery of Daniela.

We are talking about 2 months until the transfer to Argentina is processed and hopefully financed.

The family also wants to finish this month the renovation of the beach house that Daniela had rented and paid for 1 year, in order to be able to start renting it to tourists asap.

The amount to cover all these expenses (2 months of renting a house in Ko Samui - 1500 €, the material to assemble Daniela's medical room - 1500 €, the caregiver who has to settle in the house - 1500 €, finish the beach house works - € 2000, pay hospital expenses until her departure - € 3000 and any unforeseen that could arise on top of basic living cost) are about €12.000 to which should be added the loan that the family made to cover part of the initial hospital costs in the Bangkok Hospital amounting to almost € 8,000 more.

TOTAL € 20,000 but the most urgent is to achieve € 10 / € 12,000 to get Daniela out of this hospital now!

We know that we are talking about a lot of money (you have already been very generous to get the € 40,000 that have already been spent in total) but thinking about Daniela's birthday (she will turn 50 on December 21) and the party she always had on her terrace at this time of the year and with Christmas right around the corner, I am sure we can all contribute a little more.

We will keep you posted.

Thank you so much for everything.

Daniela's family.

Dear All,

Yesterday on Nov 17, Daniela got transferred from the Bangkok Hospital where she had been treated since she suffered a brain stroke on Nov 1 to the Samui Hospital, on the other side of Ko Samui island.

It's been a very hard decision for the family to move her from a top of the range private hospital to a public hospital but there was no other option as the family could not afford to pay for her 5* treatment anymore.

Thanks to the funds collected via GoFundMe and through Daniela's friends, the family was able to pay the final bill of the Bangkok Hospital (38000€) in order to "release" and transfer her.

We want to thank the Bangkok Hospital for the special treatment Daniela received during those 2 weeks, saving her life and for its efforts to reduce the estimated cost of her treatment which initially rose up to 48000€.

As soon as she got transferred yesterday to Samui Hospital, she had to receive a tracheotomy surgery in order for her to breath easier and diminish possible risk of infection.
The surgery went well and Daniela's medical conditions are stable even though she remains in coma.

Obviously we can't compare the Samui Hospital's facilities to the ones of the Bangkok Hospital even though the personal is extremely kind, looking after Daniela constantly and the equipment she is plugged into looking quite new. But she is now being treated in an open-air area, sharing it with dozens of other patients and we can't imagine her staying there for weeks!! (see attached video filmed today by her sister Alejandra)

We now need to get to Stage 3.
Stage 1 was for Daniela to receive the necessary treatment to survive the brain stroke and get stable
Stage 2 was to transfer her to a more affordable hospital on the island
Stage 3 will be to transfer her back to Spain or Argentina where Daniela will be able to recover in a more adequate and peaceful environment and hopefully wake up having her family and friends near her.

We are still waiting for a final quote but such an overseas' transfer via a special aircraft equipped for people in coma will cost around 100.000€.

Once again we want to call for you help as there is no way the family can find this amount of money.

We won't have enough words to tell her family's immense gratitude to all the people that have been and will be participating to this campaign.

Let's get Daniela's back home!!!

God bless you.

Daniela's family and friends.
