Rowing Scholarships for Girls

My name is Abby. I am 16 years old, a high school junior, and a member of the River City Rowing Club (RCRC) in West Sacramento, California.
My goal is to fund scholarships ($2,000 each) for at least two young women to participate in the RCRC junior rowing program. The scholarships will cover RCRC’s yearly dues and the rowers' incidental expenses.
I worked with a non-profit organization, College Track, in Sacramento to identify two young women who are interested in rowing but cannot afford the cost of RCRC membership.
High schools in our area offer opportunities for teens to participate in sports like football and basketball that can help athletes, especially boys, with admission and scholarship funds for college. Although there are many college rowing scholarships available to women, the sport is expensive and almost never available at public high schools. Private rowing clubs are expensive to join, which means that lower income students and students from disadvantaged communities rarely have the chance to participate in the sport. Also, there is a lack of racial and ethnic diversity within rowing at all levels of the sport.
Not every potential rower has a family or social network standing behind him or her, a school or community with a rowing program, access to a knowledgeable coach or trainer, or the financial resources to row.
It is my goal to do the following with this program:
• Raise at least $4,000 to cover the costs of two RCRC scholarships (including costs of incidental expenses, such as uniforms, t-shirts, and travel) this year.
• Continue expanding this program in the future as we develop programs and resources to support additional participants.
• Become an affiliate of US Rowing's program, AmericaRows, which supports scholarship programs such as this one.
