All my life I have been attracted to the pool and the world of aquatics. After competing in swimming and water polo as a teenager for Jamaica, I decided to give back to the sport and start teaching toddlers how to swim. I started as an assistant instructor to my head coach and after many years in corporate life, I went back to the sport and since created the Learn to Swim programme Aquaworx, which I co-own.
Over the years, my experience has led to a shift in my perception of swimming. I no longer look at it as a sport, but now see it as a basic survival skill that every child should have.
For us who live on an island surrounded by water, and have an increasing rate of exposure to backyard pools and complex pools in the growing population of gated communities, it is important for every child to have the skill of swimming. While not everyone will be interesting in competitive swimming, every child should at least be able to survive in a body of water.
My exposure to the Infant Swimming Resource (ISR) programme which teaches infant swimming survival skills, has driven me to take the teaching of babies, infants and toddlers to the next level.
I have been accepted to undergo training by Infant Swimming Resource (ISR) in order to offer this programme to Jamaicans. The cost of such a valuable course is by no means inexpensive and I am therefore seeking assistance from family, friends and parents of future beneficiaries of this programme to accumulate the funds needed for the training course. This course will last 9 weeks, the majority of which I will be in the state of Florida and will incur living and transportation expenses. My goal amount will cover my full tuition, the cost for training equipment and living and transportation expenses during the period.
Please help me bring this dream alive as I develop Jamaica’s first Drown Prevention Programme though ISR certification, where not one more child drowns.
