It must be hard to stop running for your life. Ferdinand is a young calf who was on board a trailer headed to market, when a moment came that changed the course of his life. On December 18th around 11:30 am the trailer door hauling Ferdinand and other calves swung open near Busch Gardens Williamsburg while in transit. He and another calf fell out of the trailer and rolled onto the interstate. The two calves stumbled around for a few minutes obviously hurt and confused by the fall and began walking down the interstate. Traffic stopped and tried to block them in but they saw an opportunity to escape and took it.  They jumped the guardrail and went into a wooded area. Ferdinand spent the next 16 days in this wooded area, living on the run. We're unsure about what happened to the other calf who jumped the guardrail with him. (This was told to us by an eye witness at the accident)

We were first made aware of Ferdinand's situation on New Year's Eve. Instantly we sprung into action and contacted all the necessary authorities to see how we could help. After days of back-and-forth, we have finally been given permission to capture Ferdinand and bring him back to Grateful Meadows.

We are beyond moved by his will to live and can't think of a more deserving creature to share our beautiful homestead with.

Ferdinand's rescue however does not come without costs. Once we have him contained we will have our vet out right away to examine him and make sure he is healthy. We are fairly sure his time on the run has left him malnourished and dehydrated. We also have professional handlers making very long trips to assist in capturing him. Food and additional shelter requirements are just a few of the cost associated.

While these costs would never stopped us from helping, our hope is that Ferdinand's story moves you the same way it did for us. Any contributions will go directly to making sure that Ferdinand is safe and all of his running was not in vain.

Update on the sweet fellow: Ferdinand's trial was yesterday. After a little confusion, we are EXCITED to say Ferdinand is officially free! We just got a call from the York County DA's office this afternoon saying that we are officially his guardians! Our hearts are elated and we can't wait to share the good news with him!
